[Protective action of cytotoxic lymphocytes depending on the antigenic determinant composition of influenza virus hemagglutinin].

The protective role of cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTL) in dependence on composition of antigenic determinants of hemagglutinin of influenza viruses H3N2 was studied. It was established that CTL do not exert protective effect under conditions of adoptive transfer, when there is one common antigenic determinant in hemagglutinins of the virus forming immunity. When all antigenic determinants in hemagglutinins of influenza viruses are identical, CTL-like antibodies represent one of the main factors of antivirus immunity.

[Thomsen's antigen in the leukocytes of leukemia patients].

Leukocytes of 19 leukemic patients and 10 healthy donors were tested for the presence of Thomsen's antigen, using a method of specific adsorption of isogenic sera. Before the adsorption the cells were sonicated. Thomsen's antigen was found in leukocytes of leukemic patients but not in cells of healthy donors.

Acute Disease↗

[Nonspecificity of the phenomenon of influenza virus phagocytosis by murine macrophages].

Peritoneal macrophage cultures from intact mice and those immune to influenza virus A/PR/8/34 (HON1) were infected with homologous virus or influenza virus A/England/42/72 (H3N2) whereupon virus was isolated from chick embryos. It was established that in intact macrophages, both viruses duplicated similarly. Macrophages immune to virus HON1 equally disintegrated both in homologous virus and heterologous influenza virus H3N2.

[Thomsen antigen in human normal and tumor tissues].

A method of specific adsorption of appropriate antibodies from human serum was used to examine tumors of 15 patients with cancer and of 6 subjects with benign neoplasms. Tissues of cancerous tumors were found to contain Thomsen's antigen. Normal tissues of the same organ taken from the same patient did not contain the antigen nor was it contained by benign tumors. The titer of specific antibodies to Thomsen's antigen in the sera of patients suffering from cancer was considerably reduced as compared to that detected in normal subjects or in patients with benign tumors.

Adenofibroma↗

[Search for the heterogenetic Forssman antigen in human breast tumor tissue].

The complement fixation test was used to examine 80 human mammary tumors for the presence of heterogeneous Forssman antigen: 62 cases of cancers of different malignancy (adenocarcinoma, solid tumors), 13 cases of fibroadenomas and 5 cases of fibrocystic mastopathies. Subject to study was also normal tissue of the mammary gland. Forssman antigen was not found in all the tumors tested, as it was not detected in tissues of the normal mammary gland. Therefore the process of transformation of normal cells to tumor ones is not accompanied by the occurrence in them of heterogenous Forssman antigen.

Adenocarcinoma↗

[Forssman antigen in cancerous and normal human tissues].

By reactions of complement fixation, hemolysis and specific adsorption it was found that the heterogenous Forssman antigen is not contained in erythrocytes of normal human tissues and tumors. In the sera of healthy individuals as well as in those with cancer and benign tumors and in rabbit sera there were found complement-fixating antibodies and hemolysins being specific with regard to sheep erythrocytes (Forssman's antigen). There was noted a decreased level of heterophilic Forssman antibodies in the sera of females with malignant and benign genital tumors compared with healthy ones.

[Effect of antilymphocyte serum on the course of influenzal infection in mice].

The effect of antilymphocyte serum (ALS) on the course of infection produced by influenza A/PR8/34 virus in mice weighing 10-12 g was studied. Inoculation of mice with ALS produced a longer persistence of influenza virus in the lung tissue and in the blood (up to 15 days of the observation period), whereas in the controls no influenza virus could be isolated after 9 days. No antibody production in ALS-treated mice was observed. The immunosuppression in mice reduced the extent of involvement of the lungs and lethality as compared with the control animals, being conducive to the change of the acute influenza infection into chronic one.

[Immunologic study of tumors of the human thyroid gland].

The presence of specific antigens was shown in 6 of 17 cases of human thyroid carcinoma by the complement fixation test. These antigens were absent in the tissues obtained from healthy man and embryo. Immunological variants of these antigens were found in some patients. The specificity of the antigen determinants of the thyroid tumours is apparently determined by the substances of the protein origin.

[Interaction of immune and normal macrophages with the influenza virus].

The interaction of macrophage cultures from immune and non-immune animals with influenza A/PR8/34 virus was studied. Significant differences were demonstrated between immune and normal macrophages. Influenza virus could be found in immune macrophages for a considerably shorter period than in normal macrophages. In immune macrophage cultures as compared with normal macrophages the synthesis of V- and S-antigens occurred only in a small number of cells. The study of the hemadsorbing capacity of macrophages showed the number of cells adsorbing erythrocytes to increase in normal macrophage cultures in contrast to those of immune macrophages. When macrophage cultures were inoculated with influenza virus, it exerted a cytopathic effect on normal macrophages at a lower multiplicity of infection whereas much greater infectious doses were required to produce the CPE in immune macrophages. The experimental results suggest that in infection or immunization certain changes occur in macrophages which may play a role in elimination of influenza virus from the body and in immune response.
