Computed tomography (CT) in late infantile metachromatic leucodystrophy.

Computed tomographic features of 7 cases of the late infantile form of MLD confirmed by sural nerve biopsy are presented. Diffuse symmetrical white matter, low attenuation of the cerebral parenchyma was the common feature. Hypodensity of the temporal lobes and the cerebellar hemispheres are 2 features which have not been reported earlier. Three patients had brainstem atrophy without evidence of cerebral atrophy. Awareness of the various CT features of MLD may help in more definitive radiological diagnosis of the disease and to differentiate it from other dysmyelinating diseases of the central nervous system.

Multi-infarct dementia: a computed tomographic study.

CT Scan of 30 patients with multi-infarct dementia (MID) were compared with age- and sex-matched controls. Infarcts were seen in 93% of MID cases and 10% of controls. A marked difference in the occurrence of white matter low attenuation was seen between the groups. All the parameters of cerebral atrophy studied showed a statistically significant correlation with the presence of dementia.

Prognosis in solitary intraventricular haemorrhage. Clinical and computed tomographic observations.

Isolated intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) in the absence of parenchymal haematoma is unusual. Fifteen patients with solitary IVH among 170 with intracranial haemorrhage were studied. Clinical details and computed tomographic features were analysed to evaluate the prognostic significance of various clinical and CT parameters. Outcome is affected by hypertension, level of consciousness, clinical progression, pupillary changes and restriction of eye movements. Factors found on CT to have prognostic significance included degree of ventricular bleed, presence of cisternal bleed, hydrocephalus and cerebral atrophy.

Computed tomography in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: report of 15 cases.

Computerized tomographic (CT) study of the brain was performed in 15 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Most patients in Stage II (6/8) had cerebral edema and diffuse white matter low attenuation, and patients in Stages III and IV (5/7) had atrophy of cerebral cortex, brainstem and cerebellum. Low density areas in deep grey matter nuclei (5 cases), large focal areas of white matter hypodensity (3/15) and evidence of brainstem atrophy without cerebral atrophy (2/15) were features not hitherto described. One patient in Stage III had normal scan. Correlation of scan findings was better with the stage of the disease than with the duration of SSPE.

Hemiatrophy and glioblastoma.

There are very few recorded instances of brain tumors with ipsilateral secondary brain atrophy. All 10 cases in the literature are from Japan. We report a case of primary cerebral hemiatrophy with ipsilateral glioblastoma. As far as we are aware, no such case has been described in the literature.

Transient computerised tomographic (CT) abnormalities following partial seizures.

Computerized tomography (CT) is widely used in the diagnostic work-up of epilepsy. However, there are only scant reports of transient postictal CT abnormalities. Three patients who presented with elementary partial seizures and manifested transient CT findings are presented. The need for an adequate ictus-free period for CT evaluation of seizure disorders is emphasised.

Peripheral neuropathy in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis--immunohistochemical and ultrastructural evidence.

A patient with SSPE who had prominent diffuse white matter hypodensities on CT scan indicating central white matter demyelination and nerve conduction abnormalities suggestive of peripheral neuropathy is reported. Diagnosis was established by demonstration of elevated CSF measles antibody titers and presence of virus antigen and nucleocapsid in peripheral nerve. To our knowledge, this is the first report of demonstration of measles virus nucleocapsides and antigen in the peripheral nerve in SSPE.
