Osteoporosis: a risk factor for dental implants and in the prognosis of periodontal therapy.

Two patients were referred to the Graduate Periodontal Clinic, one for placement of dental implants, the other for treatment of advanced periodontal disease. It was determined from an analysis of the Hounsfield scales of bone density from a CT scan that the patient requesting dental implants had severe osteoporotic changes and was, therefore, not a good candidate for the procedure. The second patient's medical history revealed multiple fractures occurring over the years that suggested the presence of osteoporosis. This diagnosis was subsequently confirmed by referral of the patient to an osteoporosis clinic.

A peripheral giant cell granuloma mimicking a combined endodontic-periodontic lesion.

This case report delineates an instance whereby a peripheral giant cell granuloma mimicked certain features of an endodontic-periodontic lesion. When the area did not resolve following endodontic therapy, and in fact actually increased in size in a relatively short time, the decision to biopsy the area was made. After histologic examination, a definitive diagnosis of peripheral giant cell granuloma was possible. The patient is being monitored postoperatively to ensure no recurrence of the lesion. The relevance of this case report is that it exemplifies the fact that the lesion may be encountered by periodontists, and that the lesion may clinically resemble a mucocele or peripheral ossifying fibroma.
