[Biphotonic absorptiometry of the foot: methodology and application to algodystrophy].
A simple methodology for the evaluation of the bone mineral content of the foot by biphotonic absorptiometry is described. From the study of a test population, a pathological demineralization threshold of 10%, given that the measurement is expressed in g, has been defined at the level of the forepart of the tarsus. This threshold enables the significant distinction between the test population and a population with algodystrophy. Biphotonic absorptiometry seems to provide a quantitative diagnostic argument to complement the radiographical and scintigraphical examinations.

Isoflurane-fentanyl anesthesia for coronary bypass surgery in patients with good left ventricular function.
The hemodynamic effects of a balanced anesthetic technique where a moderate dose of fentanyl (32 micrograms/kg) is supplemented with isoflurane were studied in 15 patients with good left ventricular function. Mean inspired isoflurane concentration was 0.63% during induction and 0.74% during maintenance. Induction of anesthesia was associated with a significant decrease (p less than 0.05) in systolic and diastolic pressure and left ventricular stroke work index (LVSWI). During maintenance systolic blood pressure and LVSWI remained significantly depressed. It is concluded that isoflurane-fentanyl anesthesia has myocardial depressant properties. There is a reduced incidence of break-through hypertension during noxious stimuli, when compared with high-dose fentanyl anesthesia. During maintenance, clinical signs that could reflect myocardial ischemia were not observed. Heart enzymes remained within normal range postoperatively in all patients and ECG morphology was unchanged.

Three-dimensional distribution of Ag-NOR proteins in rat superior cervical ganglia nucleoli according to circadian rhythm.
A three-dimensional reconstruction of the distribution of Ag-NOR proteins in nucleoli of sympathetic neurons of a rat killed during the dark period of its light-dark cycle was compared with previously reported analyses on the three-dimensional distribution of fibrillar centers, the high-resolution localization of these proteins, and the morphometric results. The domain occupied by these proteins appeared to far exceed that of the fibrillar centers and included the dense fibrillar RNP component. In the present material this component in turn provided partial bridging between the units consisting of the fibrillar centers plus their surrounding dense fibrillar component.

[Influence of thymectomy on the lymphoid regeneration of hematopoietic bone marrow after sublethal irradiation].
In C57BL mice, bone marrow lymphoid regeneration after a sublethal irradiation is modified by a graft of normal marrow cells. This effect is suppressed in thymectomized mice since a lymphoid peak is observed after a 350 R irradiation; its composition is heterogeneous: small lymphocytes, lymphoblasts and peculier cells named "X cells". The same phenomenon is observed in mice where all the thymocytes and thymus derived and peripheral lymphocytes are destroyed. These results exclude that bone marrow lymphoid regeneration after irradiation is due to a migration of lymphoid cells of thymic origin to the marrow. They could be explained by the effect of a humoral thymic factor on marrow lymphopoiesis.
[Comparative morphological study of the prothallial development in Asplenium species].
This study concerns the comparative development of gametophytes of nine Asplenium species. Some of them are diploïd, others tetraploid. They were studied on a cytogenetic point of view by british workers who found parental relationships between these species. The morphological analysis of the gametophytic development permits to determine the definite stages on which the tetraploïd species like to the supposed diploid parents. The inherited morphological characteristics are also described, for instance: formation of the prothallial plate, form of the marginal hairs. This qualitative analysis of the gametophytic development is not sufficient to confirm the supposed parental relationships. Therefore, precisions are given by the results of the quantitative analysis of the prothallial development and the study of the vascularization of the young sporophytes; these results will be soon published.
[Quantitative study of the prothallial morphogenesis in Asplenium species].
A precedent paper concerned a qualitative analysis of the gametophytic development in nine Asplenium species. By a quantitative study, we specify the parental relationships among these species. The surface of the gametophyte and the number of maginal hairs increase differently for each species. The density of the marginal hairs depends on the considered species. The relation among the morphological gametophytic parameters is constant in a group of determined species. The principal componant analysis is realized for all the parameters measured during the prothallial development. It confirms parental relationships among the diploids and tetraploids species on a morphological point of vue.

Kinematic and kinetic asymmetry in patients with leg-length discrepancy.
The symmetry index (SI), as one of methods to evaluate gait pattern in patients with leg-length discrepancy (LLD), helps to estimate the acceptable range of inequality and to determine symmetry in the kinematic and kinetic data before and after a heel lift, although this parameter has a large standard deviation that undermines its accuracy. Thirty patients with LLD were studied by a motion-analysis system and a force plate. Joint motion of the lower extremity in the sagittal plane, back movement in the coronal plane, and three-dimensional ground-reaction forces (GRFs) were registered. From a linear-regression analysis, a mean value of inequality of 2.33 cm (range, 2.12-2.54) was found to correspond to an acceptable gait symmetry. After a heel lift, the SI of the pelvic tilt at midstance and of the vertical GRF at initial contact increases significantly, but the SI of the medial GRF at terminal stance decreases. Patients with an inequality of a mean value of 0.51 cm determined by palpating bilaterally the top of the iliac crest (the TIC1 subgroup) showed a lesser value of the SI of the center of pressure in the forward direction during stance compared with the group with a mean value of inequality of 1.39 cm (the TIC2 subgroup). As a result of our findings, we conclude that the effect of the amount of correction by a heel lift on gait symmetry is unpredictable.
