[Control of disinfection in buildings used for poultry raising].

During a 2-year survey in turkey breeding farms, it was possible to compare six disinfection procedures by monitoring 14 first disinfections following the breeding house cleaning and 14 second disinfections prior to animal return. By swabbing all the germs from asbestos concrete surfaces, we noted that in the case of first disinfection the chloramine T-based product was more effective than phenol or quaternary ammonium-aldehyde-based products. For the second disinfection, it was demonstrated that a minimal dose of 15 kg of formaldehyde was necessary for disinfection to be satisfactory; 12 to 15 kg paraformaldehyde was as effective as 40 to 60 liters of 30-35% formol for buildings, the ground surface of which covered between 1,000 and 1,300 m2.

[Comparison of 4 technics for collecting bacteria on cement, asbestos-cement and steel in hen-breeding buildings].

A comparative study between 4 sampling techniques (swabbing, pistol-washing, printing on agar medium either with or without neutralizer) was performed on three materials (concrete, asbestos-concrete, steel) following numeration of three bacterial flora (the total aerobic flora, faecal streptococci, pseudomonas). The highest levels of contamination were detected with pistol-washing irrespective of the substrate and flora recovered. A correlative study carried out from the contamination levels reveals that a significant correlation exists in all cases, with a low probability of error.

[2 methods of studying in vitro the virucidal action of disinfectants].

The assessment of the virucidal activity of disinfectants and antiseptics is a permanent care. That is why, in recent years, studies have been developed in order to standardize these techniques. The present work describes two methods, the method of instantaneous dilution and that of gel filtration. The kinetics of inactivation of two viruses (the Talfan and the Canine Contagious Hepatitis viruses) which were obtained after contact with 10 disinfectants commonly used in agriculture and the food industry are compared. Usually these products exhibit a weak virucidal activity at the dosages recommended by the manufacturer. The present study emphasizes the necessity to have available viruses with a high titer and the inconvenience of using only the gel filtration technique when a precipitation takes place between the disinfectant and the viral suspension.

[Action of various disinfectants on 7 envelope-free viruses].

The activity of 15 disinfectants on seven nude viruses belonging to groups significant in human and veterinary medicine and in the bio-industry was investigated by a dilution technique. These trials, performed organic matters being either present or not revealed that current products such as 0.8% sodium hydroxyde and 1 degree chlorine water were the most active. According to their compositions, the chemicals varied greatly in their efficacy.

[Efficacy of disinfectants in contamination of eggs].

Good hygiene practices are essential in livestock production. Likewise hygienic production and storage of hatching eggs contribute to improve hatchability and to obtain healthier fowls. This study was designed to compare three methods of disinfection commonly used in poultry houses: fumigation with formaldehyde, pulverization of an iodophore and synthetic phenols. By washing eggs in sterile bags to determine the bacterial contamination on shells, the best results were obtained with formaldehyde, and the smallest bacterial decrease with the iodophore.

[Enzootic bovine leukosis application of E.L.I.S.A. technique for the detection of antibodies].

A simple microplate method of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (E.L.I.S.A.) for detecting antibodies to bovine leukosis virus (B.L.V.) is described. The antigen consisted of a solution containing the two major antigens of the B.L.V. (gp 51 and p 24) obtained by a technique of purification using CN-Br activated Sepharose 4B. This E.L.I.S.A. was compared with the agar gel immunodiffusion test (A.G.I.D.T.) in a study of 545 bovine sera. The total discrepancy rate between the two tests was 11% with a better sensitivity for E.L.I.S.A.
