Two new cases of rheumatic pelvispondylitis associated with bilateral fibrosis of the pulmonary apex are reported and published data are reviewed. The clinical, radiological, evolutive and diagnostic features of this probable pulmonary manifestation of rheumatic spondylitis are described, and the pathogenesis is discussed.
Vacancy rates for RNs and for LPNs reported in a universe survey of U.S. community hospitals were examined for relationships to a number of characteristics of the institutional makeup, environment and setting, staff organization and composition of these hospitals. RN vacancy rates were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship to the number of beds in the hospitals, the number of hospital beds in the states in which the hospitals were located, and government control. Significant negative relationships were found with the number of RN graduates from nursing programs in the state, occupancy rate, and the ratio of RNs to total inpatient days. LPN vacancy rates showed a significant positive relationship to government control, southern locations, restriction of admissions to children and the ratio of RNs to LPNs. LPN vacancy rates showed a significant negative relationship to the number of hospital beds, occupancy rate, the ratio of LPNs to total inpatient days and the ratio of other nursing service personnel to LPNs.
Elevations of serum thyroxine without thyrotoxicosis or binding protein abnormalities have been documented in 8 of 13 family members, representing 4 generations. This syndrome appears to represent an elevated threshold for the amount of free thyroxine substrate required to maintain adequate T3 production form the peripheral monodeiodination of T4. It reiterates the need for a prudent re-evaluation of all clinically euthyroid patients with elevated serum thyroxine concentrations before concluding that they are indeed thyrotoxic.
The authors have studied in the lungs and blood the time course evolution of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) administered by inhalation, in rabbits and guinea pigs. NO2 was rapidly oxidized into NO3-. The latter were eliminated within 24 h, the oxidation rate having been variable according to animal species. In presence of NO, the persistence of NO3- beyond 24 h indicates a retardation of the oxidation, NO having to pass previously by the NO2- step.

Incubation of microsomal fractions with labelled 3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate results in incorporation of [35S]sulfate into endogenous glycosaminoglycans. Specific radioactivity observed incorporated into heparan sulfate chains is 10-fold greater than that incorporated into chondroïtin sulfate chains. This is in agreement with the results obtained for glycosylation of glycosaminoglycans in arterial wall membrane fractions. Sulfation of heparan sulfate was studied since it contains N- and O-sulfate groups in contrast with the other sulfated glycosaminoglycans which contain only O-sulfate groups. Sulfation of heparan sulfate occurs rapidly, since sulfate incorporation is detected after exposure for only 0.5 min. Heparan sulfate was identified on the basis of its resistance to hyaluronidase and chondroïtin ABC lyase, its susceptibility to heparitinase, its sensitivity to nitrous acid and the presence of glucosamine as the only hexosamine. The chemical composition of the purified heparan sulfate fractions provides evidence for the high degree of sulfation of its chains. Studies into the distribution of sulfate residues on heparan sulfate at different times of sulfation indicate that N-sulfate groups are not randomly introduced into the polymer. The relationship between the processes of N- and O-sulfation was studied. The present results demonstrate that preferential N-sulfation is obtained for incorporation of labelled precursor over a short period, the O-sulfation occurring on previously N-sulfated heparan sulfate.
This experiment tested the capacity of a calf-skin collagen-mineral gel to induce bone regeneration within surgically-created periodontal defects in one dog and four monkeys. No bone regeneration occurred within 8 to 14 weeks. Healing primarily consisted of soft connective tissue formation and re-epithelialization. Notched defects on root surfaces did not repair with cementum and were always foci of inflammation.
We investigated "in vitro" incorporation of labelled (14C) - or (35S) - precursors into microsomal heparan sulfate of pig aortic media-intima. Heparan sulfate, predominantly located on the external surface of smooth muscle cells, may conceivably provide a mean for the selective binding of plasma components to the arterial wall; functional implications of such binding, have been proposed in atherogenesis and thrombogenesis processes. We demonstrated the great metabolic activity of heparan sulfate chains. By evaluation of radioactivity incorporated into monosaccharides residues, we showed that sugar was quantitatively transferred from UDPGlcNAc 14C into endogenous glycosaminoglycans. The relationship between the N- and O-sulfation processes into heparan sulfate chains was studied after different time of sulfation by labelled sulfate nucleotide: PAP(35S). Our results outlined that preferential N-sulfation is obtained with short time exposures to labelled precursor, the O-sulfation occurring on previously N-sulfated heparan sulfate.

During experimental utilization on the dog (per os) of several types of materials capable to be modified by the liver after digestive absorption, sugars appeared naturally opaques in the gastric cavity and so they could substitute in C.T. to the habitual materials of contrast, we also notice some belated modifications on intra hepatic density that might be in relation with the metabolism of intra hepatic glucose.

Fixation of CO on human blood or rabbit blood in presence of NO in similar concentrations is diminished by the formation of methemoglobin and nitrite methemoglobin. NO is oxidised in nitrate. Furthermore, it appears that oxidation of nitrite in nitrate is realised by red-blood cells. Spectrography study of blood trated by NO indicates presence of methemoglobin, nitrite methemoglobin.
