Asthmatics should be encouraged to increase the quality and intensity of exercise gradually in order to allow the body to adapt to the training load. If sensible precautions are taken and if adequately controlled with medication, asthmatics can reach the top in even the most arduous of sports.
We have evaluated an improved method for processing protein blots on nitrocellulose or nylon membranes using cylindrical plastic containers. The method, which is directly analogous to the commonly used method of photographic processing in rolling drums, uses small values of reagents which are constantly washed over the blotting membrane by rotating the drum horizontally on a roller mixer. Volumes of reagents used are typically less than one-10th of those required for conventional methods using plastic bags or trays. The efficiency of probing and washing steps are greatly improved, giving an all-round increase in sensitivity, ease of processing, and economy of reagents.
A seven-year-old girl presented with life-threatening pharyngeal haemorrhage. This was subsequently found to arise from one tonsil, and a tonsillectomy eventually halted the bleeding. Two days later she developed measles, confirmed by serology and characteristic histology. Spontaneous tonsillar haemorrhage is extremely rare, and not previously reported in measles.
Twenty-eight patients with nasal obstruction due to vasomotor rhinitis were assessed using anterior rhinomanometry before and six weeks after the operation of out-fracture and amputation of the posterior ends of the inferior turbinates. It was found that the operation did not significantly improve the nasal airway. Though just over half the patients had an objective improvement in nasal airflow, only half of this group reported a subjective improvement in their symptoms.
Malignant cartilaginous tumours of the larynx are very rare, and usually arise from the cricoid cartilage. We report the first documented case of a chondrosarcoma of the epiglottis. The diagnosis, histology and treatment of these tumours are discussed.

This paper reports a multicentre, controlled, blind, prospective, randomized study into the use of prophylactic systemic antibiotics in myringoplasty surgery. Seventy-one individuals were clinically and bacteriologically assessed both preoperatively, and for a period of 8 weeks postoperatively. The results showed that antibiotic prophylaxis did not eradicate bacterial pathogens already present in preoperative ears, nor did it prevent their development during the postoperative period. The observation that an ear was wet or dry gave no indication of the actual presence or absence of pathogenic organisms.
