Qualitative research proposals and reports.

In essence, a well-developed qualitative proposal provides: 1. A clear statement that specifies the phenomenon to be studied; 2. Documentation of a need for study, with specification of the significance of the study for nursing (or social science in general); 3. Acknowledgement of the researcher's a priori orientation(s) and perspective(s) with articulated questions about the attendant presuppositions; 4. Identification of the qualitative approach with a rationale for its selection; 5. Specification of the design with attention to: a. what data are sought, b. how and when those data will be solicited, c. how relationships with research participants will be initiated, maintained, and terminated, d. how data will be managed, e. how data will be analyzed and related to preexisting knowledge, f. how findings will be reported.

Language and nursing research.

The intent of this chapter can be summarized by borrowing Paterson's (1978) words: For responsible, effective existence the professional requires language [emphasis added] to relate authentically the purposes, beliefs, concerns, and events experienced continually in the nursing world. (p. 51). The noumenal exists in those phenomena listed by practicing nurses, but each seems to be a thing in itself--something waiting for description to bring it into our everyday awareness and to give it significance. It is as though we need to assert these events as nursing's, articulate our authentic experience with patients, claim what we believe is paramount to health (i.e., good nursing), and conceptualize what is uniquely the abstract and the concrete, the enduring and the relevant meanings of shared human experience between patient and nurse. We believe that qualitative research methods have much to offer as a research paradigm that is congruent with nursing's larger worldview, paradigm, or model. We close this chapter with Table 1-9, an illustration of the language of the qualitative research methods, and leave our readers to draw their own conclusions.

A qualitative investigation of reassurance.

The findings in this exploratory investigation bear witness to the existence of good nursing practice in a system that is often criticized as inhumane. Nurses do attend to clients' emotional needs in health crises and health care situations that undermine clients' abilities to understand their experiences, to make choices, and to exercise control over their circumstances. The findings also disclose the complexity of reassurance as concept and nursing intervention. We note nevertheless a nursing style that includes physical proximity, touch, ministrations, and accompaniment over time through the experiences that threaten clients' assurance and challenge their resources. These are features of nursing practice that need to be given utmost importance through formal conceptualizations in order to preserve them in our shared nursing culture. From a research perspective, we have learned that nurses are able to describe well their experiences when asked to share in an atmosphere of expectation that experiences contribute to nursing knowledge. Qualitative approaches are especially well suited to establish such an atmosphere and to facilitate explications of nurses' work. The line of inquiry into caring as the core concept of nursing practice, which has gained the attention of nurse scholars in recent years, has enormous potential to advance humanistic nursing practice. This investigation of reassurance provides evidence of its significance for us and its relevance to the construction of knowledge about caring. Future studies of reassuring another and of being reassured using qualitative strategies contain the promise of protecting nursing expertise and contributing to its refinement.

Philosophical ponderings on qualitative research methods in nursing.

This article focuses on the philosophical underpinnings of qualitative research methods. The historical context reflects an interpretive turn from envisioning nursing as a natural science to one of a human science. The phenomological paradigm is reflected upon in the questioning of perception, philosophy, nursing philosophy, paradigms, assumptions, and praxis. An invitation to embrace human understanding of experience, meaning of life worlds, the essences of experience, the attentive practice of thoughtfulness, and caring attunements is extended. The aims of discovery and qualitative research methods are presented within social, experiential, linguistic, and cultural contexts. In a fundamental sense, this paper is about the meaning and seriousness of human experience and nursing's efforts to study such experience faithfully, with reverence and wonderment.

Methodological issues in nursing research: beyond a wax apple.

Bronowski tells us that science is the search to discover unity in the variety of nature and the variety of our experiences. Poetry, painting, and the arts are the same search. This author attempts through the language of poetry to search for the sense experience of living through contemporary methodological issue questions in nursing. The intent is to move beyond the issue of issues and to discover some sense of unity. The question is raised implicitly why our wonderful scholarship has evolved into a search for structural truth rather than dynamic meaning.

Holding the Mississippi River in place and other implications for qualitative research.

Holding back a river is used here as a metaphor and five suggested "tributaries" are suggested with the purpose of acknowledging the situated context that qualitative nurse researchers may wish to journey upon. Our nursing knowledge base must include the human experience. We need to become oriented to a world of meaning. Meaning will enlighten and give direction to our nursing practice. The unexamined taken-for-granted approach misses the essential structures of being. Those essential structures of being are what might actualize the possibilities of new ideas, new directions, new designs, new life, birth.
