Alternative dental products.

Alternative, complementary or holistic health care is a growing area of medicine and dentistry. There are a variety of dental products promoted as an "alternative" to the standard commercial dental products that most dentists recommend and most patients use. These alternative products can be categorized as standard dental products made with natural ingredients, herbal products, homeopathic products, and synthetic alternative products. The use of dental care products should be based upon sound basic science and sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy. Dental health care providers should be aware of the range of alternative dental products and be able to help their patients understand the type of support/evidence needed to determine safety and efficacy of treatment.

Complementary Therapies

[Giving birth to three or more children. Experiences and needs of the parents].

Offering in vitro fertilization (IVF-treatment) to couples who are involuntarily childless has been a help to many. At the same time it has augmented the number of multiple pregnancies. We know little about how parents experience having three or more children (multiplets) simultaneously. In order to shed light on this question a questionnaire was sent to families who had had multiplets during the years 1988-92 at the National Hospital and Ullevål Hospital, both in Oslo. 21 families completed and returned the questionnaire. The families reported that the birth of multiplets had caused practical and economic hardship. 86% of the families felt they needed more help and relief than they had received. It seems that the IVF-pregnancies were followed more closely than spontaneous multiple pregnancies. The results emphasize the importance of reducing the number of fertilized eggs per IVF-trial in order to avoid multiple pregnancies and negative consequences for children and parents.

Ingested objects: a case report with review of management and prevention.

The first step to prevent the ingestion of dental instruments or materials is awareness of the potential for this problem. The most common prevention techniques include the use of barriers (such as a rubber dam) and ligation of objects to be used intraorally if they carry some risk of ingestion. Knowledge by the dental team of the signs and symptoms of a swallowed object, retrieval techniques, documentation and proper medical follow-up are all essential to the proper management of ingested objects.

Reasons for local anesthesia failures.

U.S. dental practitioners administer about 4,000,000 local anesthetic blocks and infiltrations annually. The failure rate to achieve adequate anesthesia for the procedure is estimated to be 5 percent to 15 percent. This article describes five different categories of failures and suggest ways to troubleshoot them.
