Effects on deprivation and reinforcement-magnitude of response variability.

Animals were trained to displace any one of five response keys in order to put themselves in a stimulus condition in which reinforcement could be obtained by depressing a response lever. Decreased deprivation and magnitude of reinforcement were found to increase the variability of the distribution of key responses. The relevance of these findings to other experiments in which deprivation, reinforcement magnitude, and intermittent reinforcement were studied is discussed.

Discrimination learning.

Eight rats were run through discrimination training sessions in which responses in the dark were not reinforced whereas the first response after the onset of a light was reinforced. The procedure generated orderly learning and latency data for the individual animal. The latency distributions are adequately described by a simple mathematical formulation.

Cold exposure and heat reinforced operant behavior.

Six rats, working in a 2 degrees C ambient temperature, were trained to depress a lever to receive a brief period of heat. Four rats were then moved into the 2 degrees C environment to live, while the others continued to live at room temperature. Living at a temperature of 2 degrees C increased the number of heat presentations the animals delivered to themselves.
