Rapid detection of susceptibility to fluconazole in Candida species by a bioluminescence assay of intracellular ATP.

Infections with Candida albicans and Candida species and antifungal resistance are increasingly recognized. The detection of fluconazole resistance is indispensable. We, therefore, compared two rapid methods that use commercially available test kits with the proposed standard of the NCCLS for fluconazole testing. When strains of Candida albicans and Candida species susceptible or resistant to fluconazole were used, measurement of ATP content was superior to the other test because an excellent correlation was obtained already after 5 hours of incubation. The measurement of the metabolic reduction of XTT yielded comparable results, but 24 hours of incubation were necessary.

[Scanner-guided puncture biopsy of a lesion occupying the pterygo-maxillary fossa].

A 26-year old male patient was referred to us for impaired mouth opening. Actually, Mr. B. has been followed up for SADAM for 2 years at different hospital services. In view of the ineffectiveness of the treatments administered (occlusal releasing gutter, antiinflammatory agents) and due to occurrence of severe episodes of earache refractory to conventional analgesics, we request that a CT-scan be obtained to evidence the process invading the pterygopalatine fossa. ENT examination and scanner-guided needle biopsy are performed to enable anatomopathological analysis and diagnosis.

The activity of rosoxacin, fosfomycin, cefotiam, and spectinomycin on beta-lactamase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

We measured the activity of rosoxacin, fosfomycin, cefotiam, and spectinomycin against 51 isolates of beta-lactamase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae, all of which were susceptible to each drug at sufficient concentrations. The development of strains of penicillinase producing N gonorrhoeae (PPNG) which are resistant to spectinomycin can therefore be avoided, as there are alternative drugs.
