Sonography of ovarian tumors: predictability of tumor type.

One hundred six ovarian neoplasms were evaluated with respect to size, echogenic characteristics, and percentage of echogenic material to determine if sonography could differentiate between malignant and benign tumors and if histology could be determined. This study indicates that anechoic lesions have high likelihood of being benign tumors, usually mucinous cystadenomas or serous cystadenomas. As the percentage of echogenic material increases, the likelihood of malignancy also increases. There are two exceptions to this rule. The first is lesions with very echogenic foci, which are virtually always benign teratomas. The second is groups of tumors that are totally or near-totally echogenic. These are actually less likely to be malignancies than mixed-density tumors that have a large anechoic component. In mixed-echogenicity tumors that are not teratomas, there was no way of distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions with an acceptable degree of accuracy in an individual case. Also, with the exception of teratomas, histology could not be determined. It should be noted that in the postmenopausal patient, the maximum size of a normal ovary is 2 X 1.5 X 0.5 cm. An adnexal mass larger than this must be considered suspicious of a neoplasm.

[Clinical, electroencephalographic and computer tomographic studies of children with West and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome].

The results of clinical, electroencephalographic and repeated computed tomographic examination of 14 children suffering from epileptic seizures in connection with the West and Lennox-Gastaud syndrome are analyzed and compared. Computed tomography yields little information regarding the etiology of such forms of epilepsy. Distinct clinical and electroencephalographic findings were accompanied by normal computed tomographic results in a large proportion of the cases. To avoid misinterpretation of computed tomographic findings and consequent prognostic errors in these epileptic cases it is necessary to take possible side effects of ACTH and corticosteroid treatment into account. At the climax of hormone treatment computed tomography revealed imposing changes in the form of generalized atrophy in 10 of the 14 children examined. These receded completely upon termination of hormone treatment.

[Scintigraphic evaluation of posture-dependent stenoses of the cervical cerebrospinal fluid space].

The results obtained by scintillation scanning of the cervical CSF space at maximum ante- and retroflexion in 24 patients show that the method can be recommended for use in the case of cervical myelopathy when the polymorphous early symptoms appear and before myelography. Its use for follow-up examinations is also recommended. The detection of posture induced constriction of the lumen provides additional information and increases the sensitivity considerably because, particularly during retroflexion, minor inflammatory reactions lead to scintigraphically detectable reductions in the liquor space.

[Microscopic detection of lipids in placenta and umbilical cord blood (author's transl)].

Lipid droplets, between 0.5 and 1.0 microns in size, were recorded by means of optical light microscopy from syncytiotrophoblast, villous stroma, and villous vessels in the full-term human placenta. Their distribution patterns varied greatly in different sections of the villous tree. -- Lipid droplets were recorded also from a thick smear in arterial and venous umbilical cord blood, following haemolysis and concentration of haemolysate. They resembled chylomicrons. -- Histochemical assays have shown the droplets to consist of triglycerides and a cover of phospholipids, quite often visible, sometimes even of a mixture of triglycerides and phospholipids. Some of the droplets, which were located in the villous stroma, seemed to consist of phospholipids only. -- The conclusion drawn from morphological findings is that triglycerides in the form of chylomicrons are absorbed through endocytosis from maternal blood, before they traverse the syncytium to penetrate the embryonic vascular system. Phospholipids are thought to be admixed in that phase. Some of the phospholipid droplets are actually formed in the syncytium.

[Pelvic fractures in children: clinic, late results, biomechanic (author's transl)].

From 1917--1976 68 pelvis fractures of children (up to 14 years) were hospitalized at the department of Surgery, University of Göttingen. About 75% were traffic accidents. The lesions prefer the iliosacral joints, symphysis and the biogenic connections. Experimental compressions confirm the clinical fractures. The controls show sufficient subjective results. Because of pelvis dislocation and scoliosis controls are necessary.

Lymphoid cell lines: in vitro cell markers in correlation to tumorigenicity in nude mice.

Tumorigenicity of lymphoid cell lines of different origin upon xenotransplantation (s.c. and i.m.) in cell concentrations of 1 X 10(6) cell/inoculum into nude mice was correlated to karyotype, presence of the 14 q + marker, EBV reactivity and immunological markers. Lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL), lacking the 14 q + marker failed to produce tumors independent upon diploidy or aneuploidy. Lymphoma-type lines of Burkitt lymphoma, lymphosarcoma and Hodgkins disease-origin, genotypically aneuploid, and expressing the 14 q + marker were tumorogenic in nude mice, when inoculated in the same cell quantities where LCL failed to form tumors. Tumorgrowth in nude mice was independent upon the presence of EBV in the inoculated cells.

[Relationships between body build, overweight and energy exchange in standardized bicycle erogometer test].

Of 70 healthy probands, among them 28 males and 18 females with moderate to large overweight, by means of indirect calorimetry were determined energy exchange and respiratory quotient in rest as well as with 60 and 95 watt bicycle ergometer load. Furthermore, from body-weight, height and 4 measures of skinfolds relative weight, body surface, fat content of the body and lean body mass were calculated. Energy exchange of obese persons in rest and during work were significantly increased, compared with the control groups the differences decreased with increasing size of load. As to the two degrees of watt in males and females resulted ascertained positive relations between oxygen consumption and all anthropometric sized investigated (correlation coefficient between 0.79 and 0.43). As basis for the calculation for the prognosis of the energy requirement of obese persons the degrees of overweight and absolute body weight appear particularly suitable.
