Organization of the screening programme in Bialystok Province.

This paper describes the new "model" of the cervical cancer screening introduced as pilot study in the Białystok Province. The new programme was carried out to choose which "model" was better: computerized monitoring and invitation to the women to the outpatient clinic for the Pap-test performed by screeners on full integration into gynecologic health care. The new system introduced in the chosen outpatients clinics increased the acceptance (of the screening) by women especially in younger age groups.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in patients with a solitary kidney.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was used to treat 68 patients with renal calculi in a solitary kidney. Epidemiological information, including stone number, size and location, was similar to that of other patients treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Renal function as measured by serum creatinine changed negligibly in the majority of the patients. Three patients had transient serum creatinine elevations greater than 2 mg. per dl. that were caused by obstruction from stone fragments. There were 2 perirenal hematomas that required transfusion. One patient required retrograde manipulation of a ureteral stone before extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, while 6 required stone manipulations after therapy for steinstrasses. Of 59 patients evaluable after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy 58 (98.3 per cent) had a successful result: 38 (64.4 per cent) were completely free of stones and 20 (33.9 per cent) had clinically insignificant residual fragments. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is effective and safe in a solitary renal unit. We believe that in most patients it is the procedure of choice. Attention to fever, urine output and fragment size perioperatively is crucial.

[Biochemical and morphological studies of cells of the corpus uteri mucosa in women with risk of uterine cancer].

On basis of the investigations authors found out that threat of cancerous process is related to increasingly growing disturbances in tissue trophics in disturbances in the process of growth and differentiation of glandular cells of mucosa of uterine corpus as well as increased capacity of cytoplasmic receptor to estrogen and elevated fibrinolytic activity of endometrium.

Treatment of unilateral fourth nerve paralysis.

Fourth nerve pareses are the most frequently seen. Treatment is aimed at correcting the deviation according to a classification based on the spread of comitance of the deviation. With the recent addition of the Harada-Ito operation and the revival of the use of adjustable sutures, the choice of operative procedure has been widened to give even better results.

Dissociated vertical deviation. Treatment with the faden operation of Cuüppers.

Thirty-four patients (49 eyes) who had dissociated vertical deviation were treated with faden operation of Cüppers. The median follow-up period was 14 months. The operation produced good results in 23 of the patients, some improvement in seven, and did not help four. The posterior fixation suture was placed 14 mm behind the superior rectus muscle insertion and the superior rectus muscle was recessed.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis: surgical management of a case with unusual clinical and histological features.

Our case of cutaneous leishmaniasis clinically resembles the atypical form "infiltrees en nappes" that was described by Photinos in 1930. A subsequent biopsy of the lesion was performed more than one year after its onset and after a full course of stibogluconate sodium and the specimen showed multiple organisms in multinucleated giant cells as well as in histiocytes. Electrodesiccation and curettage of the lesion resulted in complete healing with minimal scarring.
