Structure of a radiate pseudocolony associated with an intrauterine contraceptive device.
Transmission electron microscopy of a radiate pseudocolony associated with an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) showed central bundles of extracellular fibers averaging 35 nm in diameter, surrounded by layered mantles of electron-dense, amorphous granular material. No bacterial, viral, or fungal structures were present. X-ray microanalysis revealed copper, sulfur, chloride, iron, and phosphorus; no calcium was found. It is postulated that these structures and histologically identical non-IUCD-associated granules from the female genital tract, as well as similar structures from other body locations, including those reported in colloid cysts of the third ventricle, are of lipofuscin origin.

Synovial sarcoma arising in an anatomical bursa.
In previous studies, the origin of synovial sarcoma directly from synovium has not been satisfactorily established. This case report describes the light and electron microscopic features of a biphasic synovial sarcoma occurring within the popliteal fossa. At surgery, a cystic mass was identified in relationship to the semitendinosus tendon at the anatomical site of the semitendinosus bursa. The tumour originated from the inner surface of the bursa as multiple papillary projections with no evidence of extension beyond the capsule of the bursa. Portions of the synovial surface were hyperplastic but otherwise normal. The findings indicate that biphasic synovial sarcoma can arise directly from synovium and support the hypothesis of a mesenchymal histogenesis for this tumour.

Familial thyroid nodulation and arrhenoblastoma.
A patient who had thyroid nodules and a functioning ovarian arrhenoblastoma had a family history of thyroid nodulation affecting both males and females in four consecutive generations. One relative had multiple follicular adenomas of the thyroid. The findings support the proposal that this is another genetically determined endocrine organ tumor complex.
Pseudo-sulfur granules associated with intrauterine contraceptive devices.
A structure resembling a sulfur granule found in histologic sections of endometrium from patients with intrauterine contraceptive devices is described. It is distinguished from a true sulfur granule on morphologic grounds and is further characterized as a foreign substance, most probably fragments of the synthetic contraceptive device. It is not associated with clinical disease. Microbiologic cultures of removed intrauterine contraceptive devices show no consistent or predominant growth pattern.
A papillary adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis in a young girl. A light- and electron-microscopic study.
An unusual primary papillary renal pelvic tumor associated with calcareous uropathy was found in a young girl and was diagnosed, using light microscopy, as a papillary adenocarcinoma; electron microscopy showed similarities between the tumor-cell type and the cells normally found lining the collecting tubules or ducts of Bellini. The patient has been free of recurrence over a five year follow-up period.
Peripheral arterial insufficiency due to giant cell arteritis.
Progressive peripheral arterial insufficiency developed in a 53-year-old man who was referred for investigation of fever of unknown origin. Angiograms showed a smooth beaded appearance to both deep femoral arteries and biopsy of an occluded popliteal artery disclosed the lesions of giant cell arteritis. An excellent clinical response was obtained with steroid therapy.
Abdominal and endometrial actinomycosis associated with an intrauterine device.
Actinomycotic endometrial infection associated with an intrauterine device (IUD) complicated chronic abdominal inflammatory disease in a 28-year-old woman. Colonies of organisms with morphologic resemblance to and staining reactions of Actinomyces israelii were observed in tissue adherent to the IUD and in inflamed omental and pericolic tissues. However, the organism could not be cultured. Because intact tissues are resistant to actinomyces it is likely that the IUD created an environment favouring the establishment and growth of the organism.

Case of stillbirth due to infection with Listeria monocytogenes.
A case of listeriosis in a stillborn baby is described. The causative organism was isolated from lung, placenta, and meconium. The only manifestation of infection of the baby's mother was a slight pyrexia three days before delivery which subsided quickly after treatment with ampicillin. Examination of the mother 11 days after delivery failed to produce evidence of listerial infection.
