Effective management with lithium of a persistent, post-traumatic hypomania in a 10-year-old child.

A 10-year-old child who suffered closed head trauma resulting in a coma of 1 week's duration at the age of 4, developed a persistent, severe behavioral disorder characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity, distractability, irritability, and grandiosity. Prior attempts at treatment with stimulants and behavioral modification were unsuccessful. Treatment with lithium carbonate resulted in a marked reduction in symptoms and attenuation in her emotional lability.

Isolation and partial characterization of cuticular collagen from the parasitic nematode Gaigeria pachyscelis.

The cuticle from adult Gaigeria pachyscelis was isolated by solubilizing the internal tissues with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at 37 degrees C. Cuticular protein was extracted with guanidine-HCl and beta-mercaptoethanol and purified by ammonium sulphate fractionation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of purified protein revealed 2 polypeptides with apparent mol. wts of 58,000 and 74,000. As judged from their hydroxyproline content both of them are collagenous in nature. Results of gel filtration indicate that cuticular collagen exists in two forms, a non-associated form at low concentration and an associated form at high concentration.

Use of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the diagnosis of Dictyocaulus filaria infection.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect and quantify antibodies to whole worm extract antigens of Dictyocaulus filaria. The results provided evidence that the test was highly sensitive and could be used as a tool for epidemiological studies. No cross reactions were observed with sera from lambs infected with the hookworm Gaigeria pachyscelis.

Geaster mammosum: a bactericidal fungus used in Himalayan folklore.

The discovery is described of the high bactericidal and healing properties of basidiospores of a "star fungus" identified as Geaster mammosum Chev. (family: Geastraceae) growing saprophytically in pine forests. It is used in folk medicine for burns by the inhabitants of Kumaon. This drug was clinically tried on 25 patients with karnasrava (otorrhoea), 8 with karnasula (earache), 7 with vrana (wounds) and 2 with nabhipaka (umbilical sepsis) showing an improvement/cure in almost all cases. The drug offers potential for development as a therapeutic agent.

Acute intermittent porphyria. A case report.

A case of acute intermittent porphyria is presented. This case emphasizes the clinical, biochemical and endocrinological changes, and their possible aetiology is discussed. Treatment, especially the use of intravenous haematin, is also described.
