Laboratory infection of animals with Schistosoma haematobium is generally unsatisfactory as adult worms invariably inhabit the portal venous system rather than the vesical plexus as in man. However, it was thought that certain primates might prove more valuable for experimental studies of schistosomiasis than the usual laboratory animals. Baboons, Papio anubis, were therefore exposed to cercariae of S. haematobium and the pattern of egg excretion in stools and urine was followed quantitatively. Histological studies of various organs were made and it was found that although eggs were excreted in the faeces, they were also passed in the urine and that tissue changes in the bladder were similar to those found in human infections. It is suggested that the sequelae of S. haematobium infection found in man might develop in baboons and that the animal may be useful for studying their development in the laboratory.

With a view to developing a schedule for the ambulatory treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection with sodium antimony dimercaptosuccinate (TWSb), a trial was conducted in Tanzania of the comparative effectiveness of daily and weekly injections of TWSb in schoolchildren. In-patients received five daily injections of 6 mg/kg, and out-patients the same total amount in five weekly injections. It was found that the two schedules were equally effective, and that, while the cure rate varied inversely with the intensity of infection as assessed by egg output, the reduction in egg output of groups of patients was reasonably constant regardless of the initial egg load. The author suggests that in the evaluation of drugs for schistosomal infection regard should be had to the intensity of infection and that the percentage reduction in egg output should be investigated as an additional index of therapeutic effectiveness.

The pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases is only partially understood. In particular, the question remains why many nuclear proteins have been identified as autoantigens. One possible mechanism for an autoimmune response to nuclear proteins involves their exposure to the immune system. In this report we discuss currently available data on the exposure of nuclear proteins by expression at the cell-surface. Although the pathways of surface expression remain unclear, the presence of nuclear proteins at the cell-surface might reflect a pathological reaction leading to an exposure of epitopes, e.g. to self-reactive B-cells. It is suggested that cell-surface expression of intracellular proteins can contribute to the generation of autoimmune diseases.

Efforts to recruit disadvantaged students have been increasing over the past three decades. How to retain those students once they have been recruited remains a critical issue for faculty. The authors include a Faculty Development Model presently being implemented at an inner city community college to increase faculty's expertise in enhancing the skills and abilities of students from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on the disadvantaged student.
