Collaboration through project management.

This paper focuses on project management and examines its value for nurse managers. The paper explores the implementation of project management and its contribution to the collaboration between two Trusts in West Suffolk, UK. It argues that project management could serve the interest of nurse managers within the changing culture of the health service. The collaborative project was funded by the East Anglian Regional Audit Team.

Humans

Noninfectious adverse effects of blood transfusion in the neonate.

There are many potential noninfectious complications that may be associated with the transfusion of blood products to the neonate. Most of these can be avoided by the careful preparation of the product according to current standards and the careful monitoring of the infant for metabolic changes during a transfusion. In general, there have been fewer systematic studies of transfusion-associated complications in neonates than in adults, possibly because of the difficulty of establishing a cause-effect relationship in the neonatal patient population. Such data, if available, would be useful for providing more effective blood product therapy to the neonate.

Retinoblastoma antioncogene is involved in the inhibition of myogenesis by polyomavirus large T antigen.

The expression of polyomavirus large T antigen in stably transfected C2 myoblast cells inhibits terminal differentiation without inducing a transformed phenotype. In the present work, we report on the lifting of this inhibition by a mutation that prevents polyomavirus large T antigen from binding to the product of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene (p105 RB). In contrast with cells containing wild-type large T, those with the Rb binding site mutant large T showed the same up-regulation of myosine heavy chain and myogenin mRNA expression as control cells. Furthermore, we correlate the cell cycle alteration induced by polyomavirus large T antigen expression with the inability of the cells to undergo terminal differentiation.

Non-immunologic methods of diagnosis of babesiosis.

The diagnosis of tick-borne diseases such as babesiosis still depends on observing the parasite in the infected erythrocyte. Microscopic observation is tedious and often problematic in both early and carrier infections. Better diagnostic methods are needed to prevent clinical disease, especially when susceptible cattle are being moved into disease enzootic areas. This study evaluates two techniques for early diagnosis of Babesia bovis infections in cattle, DNA probes specific for the organism and fluorescent probes specific for nucleic acid. The radioisotopically labeled DNA probes are used in slot blot hybridizations with lysed blood samples, not purified DNA. Thusfar, the probe is specific for B. bovis and can detect as few as 1000 B. bovis parasites in 10 microliters of blood. The specificity of the fluorescent probe depends on the characteristic morphology of the babesia in whole blood samples, as determined microscopically. The fluorescent probe detects as few as 10,000 B. bovis parasites in 10 microliters os blood. The application of each method for laboratory and field use is discussed.
