Three out of 40 patients with myasthenia gravis had chronic thyroiditis. The thyroid disease preceded the neuromuscular disorder in two patients, while the third developed a slowly progessive hypothyreosis during the course of the myasthenia. One patient had an initial thyrotoxicosis with subsequent development of hypothyreosis. Of the remaining 37 patients, two had enlarged thyroid glands, positive family history of thyroid disease and antibodies to thyroid globulin, but were euthyreot.
A reservoir ileostomy was created in 36 patients. Three patients died from septic complications in the postoperative period, and one patient died from rectal carcinoma during the observation period. In six patients the reservoirs were removed during the observation period because of nipple-valve extrusion, nonspecific ileitis of the reservoir, or recurrence of Crohn's disease. Complications from the reservoir and its outlet were quite frequent and included fistula formation in eight patients, nipple-valve extrusion in 12 patients, nonspecific ileitis of the reservoir in five patients, and stenosis of the nipple in one patient. Malabsorption of vitamin B12 and fat due to a stagnant loop syndrome was found in four of seven patients examined for this. Fifteen patients underwent 25 reoperations for complications from the reservoir and its outlet. Twenty-six patients still have their reservoirs. Twenty-five of them are continent. They do not wear external appliances and they empty their reservoirs with a tube two to five times daily. One patient is incontinent due to an unrepaired nipple-valve extrusion.

The results of intensive treatment including steroids and early surgery in severe colitis in the period 1971-1975 were compared to the results from the period 1966-1970, when systematic intensive therapy was not given. The period of preoperative medical treatment was reduced on average from 31 to 17 days. Approximately half the patients went into remission in each period. In the period 1971-1975 (23 patients) there was no mortality during the acute attacks or in the subsequent follow-up period. In the period 1966-1970, the immediate mortality in 30 patients was 10% (3 patients). One patient died six years later at the age of 81 during a relapse of the colitis, and the overall mortality was 13.3%.

The fourth case of localized avascular necrosis of the lesser curve of the stomach after highly selective vagotomy is reported. The pathogeneses was probably related to the relative poverty of the submucosal blood supply along the lesser curve. This complication may be prevented by peritonealizing the lesser curve before closing the abdominal wall.

A series of 9 patients with ulcerative colitis undergoing proctocolectomy and ileal intra-adbominal reservoir is reported. Eight patients are continent and 1 is incontinent. Early and late postoperative complications, work capacity and social and sexual functions are described.
From 1959 to 1970, 272 operations for thyrotoxicosis were performed. Most of the patients received anti-thyroid drugs and thyroid hormones preoperatively. The patients were continuously followed up. The primary results with low morbidity and no mortality as well as the long term results with a low rate of recurrence and a relatively high incidence of thyroid substitution are discussed. A safe and effective programme for surgical treatment of thyrotoxicosis is described. Anti-thyroid drugs and thyroid hormones should be administered as the method of choice in preparing these patients for surgery.
The limitations of catgut, which has been the only available absorbably suture material for surgical work are well known. In the present study, catgut and PGA (Dexon) are compared in 123 patients undergoing neck surgery with respect to wound complications. Dexon appears to offer a favourable alternative since this synthetic, absorbable suture material produces fewer early tissue reactions.
