The influence of permanent wear contact lenses (highly oxygen permeable silicone and less oxygen permeable highly hydrophilic Poly-HEMA) on corneal thickness was evaluated in 22 volunteers. Poly-HEMA lenses provoked a highly significant increase in corneal thickness not correlated with the fitting technique, while no significant variation in corneal thickness was observed under silicone lenses.

During 32 intravenous urografies and 48 angiografies of the kidney and the suprarenal glands the x-ray doses at the patient's skin and gonades were determined. During the angiografies the doses were measured at the hands, the gonades and the front (eyes) of the medical staff. The results are discusses. Because the x-ray doses are realtively high, the number of the pictures and the exposure time is to be reduced to the minimum. Clinical experience (sufficient training) and special knowledge is the best x-ray protection.
Infusion urograms were carried out on 2 groups of 100 in-patients each. The first group had injections of Conray FL 36, the second of Conray FL. Contrast in the early phase after 7 minutes was better with Conray FL 36 than with Conray FL. At later stages there was no clear difference.

Statistical pattern-recognition techniques have been frequently applied to the problem of medical diagnosis. Sequential Bayesian approaches are appealing because of the possibility of generating the underlying sensitivities, specificities, and prevalence statistics from the estimates of medical experts. The accuracy of these estimates and the consequences of inaccuracies carry implications for the future development of this type of system. In an effort to explore these subjects, the authors used statistics derived from a clinical database to revise the diagnostic logic in a Bayesian system for generating a differential diagnostic list. Substantial changes in estimated a priori probabilities, sensitivities, and specificities were made to correct for significant under- and overestimations of these values by a group of medical experts. The system based on the derived values appears to perform better than the original system. It is concluded that the statistics used in a Bayesian diagnostic system should be derived from a database representative of the patient population for which the system is designed.
