Properties of an endonuclease activity in Micrococcus luteus acting on gamma-irradiated DNA and on apurinic DNA.

A protein fraction from Micrococcus luteus with endonuclease activity against gamma-irradiated DNA was isolated and characterized. An additional activity on apurinic sites could not be separated, either by sucrose gradient sedimentation or by gel filtration through Sephadex G 100. From gel filtration, a molecular weight of about 25 000 was calculated for both endonuclease activities. The endonuclease activity against gamma-irradiated DNA was stimulated five-fold with 5 mM Mg++, whereas that against apurinic sites was less dependent on the Mg++ concentration. 100 mM KCl inhibited the gamma-ray endonuclease, but not the apurinic endonuclease activity. In gamma-irradiated RNA the protein recognized 1.65 endonuclease sensitive sites per radiation induced single-strand break, among which are 0.45 alkali labile lesions in the nucleotide strand. The affinity of the enzyme for the endonuclease sensitive site was evaluated resulting in a Km-value of 73 nM.

[Isotope diagnostic findigs in nephroptoses].

Radiorenography, serial scans and clearance determinations using 131-I-Iodohippurate and 51-CPr-EDTA were performed on a total of 106 patients with unilateral nephroptosis. In 45 of them with pathological findings in the upright position the examination was repeated in the prone position. 19 patients underwent nephropexy and were reexamined 2 to 6 weeks there after. The results suggest that the combination of different radioisotope methods provides a valuable and sensitive means to detect posture-dependent impairment of kidney and urinary tract function and yields an additional objective basis for the selection of patients for nephropexy.

[Late effects of neurogenic bladder dysfunctions in paraplegics (authors's transl].

The experience is based upon the care of paraplegic patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Centre Tobelbad, near Graz. Pathological changes in the urinary tract are reported as late effects in bladder dysfunctions of paraplegics. The study reviews the late complications of urethra and bladder and outlines the effects of chronic urinary infection, where particular attention is paid to the vesicoureteric reflux. Finally, the problem of urinary stones in paraplegic patients is discussed.

[Observation on the pathogenesis of severe urinary tract complications in female genitalia prolapse].

For the urologist the prolaps of the uterus and the descensus of the vagina are a serous problem, since patients in an advanced state frequently die of renal insufficiency. Earlier reports of formation of hydronephrosis in patients with genital prolaps are considered, the existing views of the pathogenesis are arranged and discussed. The own view is presented. Important is the conclusion, that the decision to correct a descensus or prolaps is not only dependent on subjective symptoms but also on the i. v. pyeolgraphy.

[Changes in the urogenital tract of spinal cord injured patient--uro-check-list applied to representative subjects (author's transl)].

On the basis of a URO-CHECK-list drawn up by the rehabilitation centre Tobelbad near Graz, 120 spinal cord injured persons were re-examined with the purpose of identifying changes in the urogenital tract. The classification and evaluation of the urological complications revealed a surprisingly high percentage of severe changes which had occurred during the first decade after the accident. As a consequence, it must be ensured that spinal cord injured persons receive yearly check-ups in a urologically oriented rehabilitation centre where all modern examination methods, including electronic techniques for the measurement of bladder pressure and urethral resistance, are available.

[Treatment of serous central chorio-retinopathy using an argon laser].

After a short survey of the symptoms of the serous central retinopathy, the authors describe its treatment by argon laser. Almost all their results have been good in so short a time that they think the best way to manage the disease is to photocoagulate the leakage point as soon as it is discovered. In this manner a long course will be prevented, which disables the patient and is not harmless for the retina.
