Production of "Asao toxin" by Aeromonas strains isolated from feces and drinking water.

Cultures of Aeromonas species were tested for production of a toxin recently purified by Asao et al. (T. Asao, Y. Kinoshita, S. Kozaki, T. Uemura, and G. Sukaguchi, Infect. Immun. 46:122-127, 1984) and described as a hemolysin with enterotoxic and cytotoxic activity. The toxin was produced by only 63% of Aeromonas sobria strains and by 93% of Aeromonas hydrophila strains. Also, 54% of A. hydrophila strains produced another cytotoxic entity.

Decrease of drug resistance in Salmonella in the Netherlands.

Since 1974, tetracycline resistance in salmonellae of human and porcine origin has decreased nation-wide in The Netherlands. This decrease has coincided with the ban on incorporation of tetracycline in animal feeds.

Escherichia coli with resistance factors in vegetarians, babies, and nonvegetarians.

The prevalence of Escherichia coli carrying resistance factors (R factors) was examined in meat-consuming individuals and in those not consuming meat (vegetarians and babies below the age of 6 months). Assuming that the transport of resistant E. coli from animals through meat and meat products to the human consumer is most important, with regard to the incidence of resistant E. coli in man, we expected a significant difference in the proportions of people with resistant E. coli between the two groups. However, the percentage with resistant E. coli was larger in the group of vegetarians and babies than in the group of meat-eating individuals.
