Effects of Gn-RH on blood serum hormone concentrations, ovulation rates and embryo production in lactating cows treated with PMSG.

The effects of gonadotrophin releasing hormone injection into pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin treated cows on serum levels of luteinizing hormone, estradiol-17 beta and progesterone and ovulation rates was evaluated in 20 cows. Pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin treatment does not always induce superovulation as was shown in this study. Luteinizing hormone levels reached peak concentrations at 1.0 h and remained significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) elevated at 2.0 h, 3.0 h, 4.0 h, and 7.0 h after the first gonadotrophin releasing hormone injection. Progesterone levels in the gonadotrophin releasing hormone treated group were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) higher than in the controls on the third and fourth days following injection. A significant correlation (r = 0.58-0.72) was noted between the number of corpus luteum and progesterone levels on each day between day 2 and day 7. More embryos were recovered (46 vs 26) from the ten treated than from the ten control cows.

Metritis following parturition: serum progesterone and 17 beta-oestradiol levels. The significance of the corpus luteum and the advisability of using a luteolytic agent as a treatment.

A group of 22 postpartum Holstein Friesian cows showing abnormal uterus were divided into two groups and treated with a) PGF(2)alpha or b) diethylstilboestrol and oxytocin. Most blood P(4) values were under 0.5 ng/mL whereas E(2) blood level was higher than in normal cycling cows. The report emphasizes the need for a careful clinical examination in order to apply the proper therapy.

Origin and developmental patterns of lactase and other glycosidases in sheep amniotic and allantoic fluid.

Intestinal lactase activity (with its associated cellobiase, 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-galactosidase and -beta-glucosidase activities) was used as a specific intestinal marker enzyme to study the release of protein and enzymes of intestinal origin in sheep amniotic fluid during gestation. In amniotic fluid, intestinal lactase activity peaked at 66--85 days of gestation and then decreased with gestation. This enzyme activity was very low or absent in allantoic fluid throughout gestation suggesting that there is no important transfer of amniotic fluid lactase towards the allantoic cavity. Maltase and 4-methylumbelliferyl-alpha-glucosidase showed no statistically significant variation with gestation in both amniotic and allantoic fluid whereas alpha-galactosidase and N-acetyl-beta-hexosaminidase which were first higher in allantoic than in amniotic fluid increased in amniotic fluid to reach allantoic fluid levels near term. Such patterns are consistent with the suggestion that the fetal urine is a source of alpha-galactosidase and N-acety-beta-hexosaminidase activities and that sheep urine is first accumulated in the allantoic sac via the urachus up to 86--90 days of gestation and thereafter passes more and more into the amniotic sac.

Structural abnormalities of the X-chromosome in a heifer.

Structural chromosome abnormalities, some of them unusual, were found in 18 (36%) of 50 photomicrographed mitotic cells of a blood lymphocyte culture from a three month old Holstein heifer affected with chronic tympanism of the rumen. The aberrations involved more specifically the X-chromosome. The etiology of the anomalies and the cause of their X-chromosome propension are of unknown nature.

[Enzymatic profile of uterine secretions of cows during estraus cycle].

The uterine secretions of 20 bovine females have been studied and the activity of the following five enzymes has been evaluated: aldolase, glucose-t-phosphodeshydrogenase (G-6-PDH), sorbitol deshydrogenase, glutamic pyruvic transminase. Significant cyclic variations have been observed for aldolase and G-6-PDH, aldolase activity being maximum during the estrogenic phase of the cycle whereas G-6-PDH activity has been more important during the progesteronic phase. These results indicate a significant uterine metabolic activity during the different phases of the reproduction processes.

[Electrolytes of the blood and endometrial secretions of the cow following glucocorticoid therapy].

The effect of two synthetic glucocorticoids, 9(alpha)-fluoroprednisolone acetate and dexamethasone (9(alpha)-fluoro, 16(alpha)-methylprednisolone) was studied on 12 normally breeding cows. Na, Mg, K, Ca and P concentrations were evaluated in the serum and in the uterine fluid at four stages of the estrous cycle. No significant changes were noted in Na and Ca concentration in either serum or uterine fluid. On the other hand, significant changes in the Mg, K and P were observed. Both drugs have caused a decrease in the content of Mg in the serum (P<0.05) during diestrus, a fall in the level of uterine K (P<0.01) during proestrus and a decrease of P during proestrus both in serum (P<0.001 after dexamethasone treatment) and in uterine fluid (P<0.001 for both drugs). It is obvious that the two drugs change the chemical composition of blood and endometrial secretions. This could jeopardize the survival of the spermatozoids and of the ovum as well as the fertilization and the implantation processes.

[Total proteins and their fractions in the serum and endometrial secretions in cows affected by infertility since materia].

Total proteins, albumine and globulins of serum and uterine secretions were evaluated in two groups of 15 normal and 15 repeat breeder cows. Cyclic significant variations of all studied parameters were observed in uterine secretions of normal cows although only total proteins showed the same pattern in repeat breeder cows where individual variations were noted to be very important. Concentrations of total proteins, albumin (P<0.05) and beta globulins (P<0.01) were different between the two groups during either the estrous or the postestrous period. Concentration of proteins in uterine fluid was higher in normal breeder cows during postestrus and diestrus.
