Institutional security indicator report: a management tool to bridge the communications gap.

This article discusses a system developed by the Security Department of Hillcrest Hospital, to measure and report the level of security-related problems in the institution. This "Institutional Security Indicator Report" is one of the components of a Management Information System which is designed to measure workload and its effect on the utilization of personnel, level of quality, and other information which provides managers with sound qualitative, quantitative and financial data.

The pericardial effusion pattern on phase images.

UNLABELLED: The effect of pericardial effusion on phase images of gated studies was investigated. Twenty-six patients with suspected or known pericardial effusion were correlated with echocardiography and/or clinical and other laboratory data to ascertain the presence and size of effusion. The phase image pattern and parameters were compared to the results previously obtained in seven normal patients, and in 26 patients with documented regional wall motion abnormalities but no evidence of pericardial effusion. The phase pattern was graded into five categories: typical (IV) (wide histogram, well defined concentric convex pattern, progressive delay toward the inferolateral area, identifiable also over the right ventricle); less pronounced (III); atypical (II); ill defined changes (I); and normal (0). RESULTS: Group L (large pericardial effusion): four of six had pattern (IV) and the left ventricular histogram showed abnormal parameters. These patients had large free effusions in the pericardial sac and none had regional wall motion abnormalities. Two of six had pattern (III) and (II) but also had ancillary pericardial pathology and/or decreased ejection fraction. Group M (moderate pericardial effusion), S (small pericardial effusion), and A (absent pericardial effusion, but not normal) had variable phase images and numeric parameters. After therapeutic drainage of pericardial fluid two patients changed pattern from IV and III to 0 and a third from III to I. Category IV pattern is 100% specific for pericardial effusion; the combination of category IV or III is 87.5% specific and 61% sensitive for large and moderate pericardial effusion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Female urethral leiomyoma (author's transl)].

Literature registers 18 cases of female urethral leiomyoma. Three new cases of such pathology are herein described, with symptoms generally recorded in the literature : obstruction. The three patients were successfully treated by transvaginal resection of the tumor. Diagnosis and treatment are simple, while follow up and prognosis are good, according to our cases and those previously described.

[Spermatogenic dysfunction and gonadotrophins (author's transl)].

The authors try to demonstrate a relation between the number of immature cells of germinal origin in sterile men's sperm and plasmatic gonadotrophin levels of the same patients. Plasma FSH, LH, testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol were assayed in two groups of male patients with teratospermia. Results were compared with those obtained in a control group of normal men. Hypophyseal gonadotrophins level is higher in men whose spermatogenesis is defective than in normal men. It is suggested that these results might support the hypothesis that a defect in inhibin synthesis would be responsible for raised gonadotrophins.

Nucleoside incorporation into strain L cells: inhibition by pleuropneumonia-like organisms.

Contamination of Strain L cell cultures by pleuropneumonia-like organismtis (PPLO) resulted in a complete inhibition of the incorporation of tritiated thymnidine and uridine. Contanminated cultures were characterized by a concentration of PPLO along the margins of the cells and in the intercellular-spaces of the cultures. Autoracliograins of PPLO-contaminated cultures were characterized by exposed silver grains over the margins of the cells. Kanamnycin was efjective in the elimination of PPLO and the restoration of nucleoside incorporation.

[Conservative treatment of bladder and prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood: possibilities for non-radical surgery].

Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder and prostate has always been difficult. Despite the significant advancements that have permitted cure, there is no agreement in the choice and order of the different therapeutic options. We reviewed the available literature evaluating the role of non-radical surgery and attempts at bladder preservation especially in children. Partial resection with sufficient margin of safety is only possible in 20% of the primary bladder tumors and the 3-year survival rate is 80%, similar to the overall survival rate for tumors localized to this site. The excellent results achieved in the case described herein underscores the possibilities of a conservative treatment modality in well-selected cases. The patient, who was submitted to partial cystectomy and received VAC polychemotherapy for a period of one year, is alive, tumor free and has preserved bladder function 50 months post-operatively.
