An interpersonal-epistemological curriculum model for nurse education.

This paper proposes a curriculum model for nurse education which holds forms of knowledge and interpersonal relationships as key issues if nurse education is to develop autonomous, reflective, critical practitioners. By adopting areas of cognitive interest, principles of andragogy and the concept of reflection-in-action, the model provides a heuristic tool which attempts to enable the provision of a nurse education which is devoted to adult learning processes and relevant to the development of education in the practice setting. The technical, practical and emancipatory areas of cognitive interest provide an understanding of learning domains which require different knowledge bases, methods of learning and forms of assessment to each other. The pedagogy/andragogy dichotomy is presented to reflect two teaching paradigms. The former approach is derived from the activity of teaching children and provides for passive dependence. The latter is more appropriate to adult learning and student self-direction. The model attempts to promote the transitional dynamic which moves the student nurse toward a state of greater self-direction. Finally, the concept of reflection-in-action is discussed in an attempt to ensure that the areas of cognitive interest and the learning strategies are inextricably linked to the practice component of a professional nurse education. All three dimensions are combined to show how each should develop in unison as the professional education of the nurse proceeds along a chronological dimension.

Clinical Competence

Ethanol extraction of basic proteins from ejaculated human spermatozoa.

A method for the extraction of basic proteins from human ejaculated spermatozoa has been developed. It relies on the previously unreported observation that such basic protein is soluble in a solution containing 60% (v/v) ethanol. This unconventional method yields a high percentage of arginine-rich basic protein which is then able to be characterized on the basis of its amino acid composition. This method also allows comparisons to be made between single ejaculates by the banding pattern each displays when subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Urethritis due to Neisseria meningitidis in a London genitourinary medicine clinic population.

A retrospective study was performed in a department of genitourinary medicine to determine the prevalence and clinical features of urethral and cervical infection with Neisseria meningitidis among patients being screened for sexually transmitted diseases. During the 28 month period of the study 11 isolates (from 10 patients) of N. meningitidis were identified from 5571 urethral cultures from homosexual men (0.2%). This compares with an isolation rate of 4.7% for N. gonorrhoeae; 1.2% samples screened for chlamydial antigen were positive. There were no isolates from 8992 urethral cultures from heterosexual men or 15,976 cervical cultures. Eight of the cases identified had features of urethritis at diagnosis; 6 were diagnosed initially as non-specific urethritis (NSU) and 2 as gonorrhoea on the basis of microscopy of a urethral smear. Eight of the 10 patients were treated with amoxycillin and/or a tetracycline, and all but one had a clinical and microbiological cure. In the study population the prevalence of N. meningitidis infection was low and restricted to homosexual men; however, it may be associated with symptoms.
