Evaluating health education in asthma -- developing the methodology: preliminary communication.

The results are reported of a preliminary study to a controlled trial evaluating health education in asthma. A questionnaire designed to assess asthma morbidity in the previous twelve months and knowledge of the condition was administered to 50 asthma patients. An independent assessment of morbidity was made by the patient's general practitioners, utilizing case notes and their knowledge of the patients. For each aspect of morbidity, `severe' asthma as assessed by doctors tended to be associated with increasing disability on questionnaire assessment. Overall, questionnaire `morbidity scores' were significantly higher in the doctors' `severe' group. Patients' level of knowledge was low, but no significant correlation was found between patients' level of knowledge and level of morbidity. The findings suggest that there is a need for health education in asthma, and that the questionnaire used is a valid tool for measuring the impact of such education on patients' morbidity. An outline of the controlled trial for evaluation of health education is given.

How general practitioners manage depressive illness: developing a method of audit.

A model of process is necessary if it is to be audited. A model derived by a group of general practitioners for an audit of their management of depressive illness is described, together with the recording form used and the results of the audit. It is suggested that other general practitioners could test the validity of the model by using the recording form to audit their own management of depressive illness.

General practitioners, students and the objectives of general practice attachments.

The objectives for undergraduate experience in general practice vary little from school to school although the timing and duration of attachment does. Students' views of the relevance and achievement of these objectives to a two-week attachment in the final year of St. George's Hospital Medical Schools' old curriculum are shown to differ from those of their GPs. The implications of these differences for planning undergraduate learning in general practice are discussed.
