Automatic electronic oxygen supply.

An automatic electronic oxygen system has been devised to supply an intensive care unit with a "fail-safe" supply of continuous oxygen. All parts of the system are fitted with alarms, as the oxygen powers gas-driven ventilators. Since the system is cheap it can be installed in hospitals where finance is limited.

Is the Internet changing the relationship between consumers and practitioners?

Consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about their medical ailments and conditions, and they want to make informed decisions about their healthcare. This development can be attributed to the increased use of the Internet. How can practitioners work with this newly found consumer empowerment and knowledge? By accepting that consumers are becoming more knowledgeable and that they want to be involved in the decision-making process. In addition, practitioners require an attitudinal shift. Whereas they previously were in total control of healthcare decisions, now they must share control and decision-making responsibility with consumers. If practitioners work together with consumers, this new relationship may become a win-win situation.

The need for specialist nurses to work with older people.

This article is based on a comprehensive literature review undertaken by the Royal College of Nursing gerontological nursing programme on the development of specialist gerontological nursing practice (Schofield et al, 1998). The scope of the original review covered the development of specialist nursing, frameworks for practice, accreditation and regulation, role components and competencies, methods of evaluating the specialist role and fields of practice. The literature review's purpose was to inform work on the development of a specialist gerontological nursing BSc (Hons) degree by distance learning. This article focuses on the key findings of the literature review, setting out the potential for the introduction of specialist gerontological nurses in the UK.

The first article in this series, published last week, examined the current provision of care for older people in nursing and residential homes. The authors also detailed the RCN proposals in a report in last week's issue. This week, in the second of two articles, the authors discuss the divisions and polarisations which make the two-tier system unworkable for a client group with a wide range of needs.
