Correlative study between computerized transverse scanning and stereoimpedoencephalography in space-occupying lesions of the brain.

Stereoimpedoencephalography (SIEG) is routinely used by the authors during stereotactic investigations of glial brain tumours prior to stereotactic implantation of isotopes or prior to conventional surgery: the brain tissue impedance is measured along a probe track according to the four electrodes impedance technique. The correlation between the tissue structures and the corresponding impedance values has been studied by comparison with the CATScan data reported on the stereotactic schedules; impedance values are influenced by changes in arterial pCO2 and also by other unknown factors; in order to avoid these uninterpretable changes of the impedance, the recorded values have been normalized with respect to the average impedance along a control track in the normal hemisphere. As a rule, the impedance profile exhibits a "hole" at the site of the pathological processes like tumours as well as surrounding oedema, and the delimitation of the pathological area is very similar to that obtained by the CATScan. There is a good linear correlation between the values of normalized impedance and the x-ray absorption as given by the computer listing of the CATScan. Lastly, statistical values of normalized impedances are determined for the main structures of the brain, showing that the tumour tissue has an impedance equal to half the impedance of the normal tissue.

[Surgical results in prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas (a propos of 40 personal observations)].

The authors present a serie of 40 histologically verified prolactin secreting adenomas. Thirty-four women and six men were explored using the usual techniques and operated by the transphenoidal approach with biological follow-up 3, 6 and 12 months post-operatively. Results were a function of tumor size and invasive potential. Although amelioration of the tumoral syndrome always resulted, fonctional and biological normalization were inconstant. Complementary anti-prolactin treatment (C.B. 154) was begun in the non-normalized patients, especially in the cases of invasive adenoma. --Normalization was achieved in 95% of enclosed adenomas, --In 61% of invasion adenomas. In those patients normalized following surgery a return to normal rythmic prolactin secretion was observed.

[Study of epilepsy by computer controlled transverse axial tomography of the brain].

The value of computerized azial tomography of the encephalon is considered:--Firstly, in relation to the different electro-clinical varieties of epilepsy (essentially primary, secondary and partial) where it provides information of a high degree of precision concerning the topography, frequency and size of morphological abnormalties of the encephalon.--Secondly, in relation to the various aetiological possibilities (tumour, post-traumatic, post-ischaemic, post-infective, et cetera). This new method is of considerable to specify an aetiology almost unknown up to the present time: post-ischaemic occipital porencephaly secondary to perinatal or infantile occlusion of the posterior cerebral artery.

[Angiographic study of cerebral convolutions and their area of vascularization].

The authors demonstrate the facility with which the principal fissures and sulci of the brain can be angiographically localized by reference to characteristic loops and bends in the courses of the branches of the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries. The study is based upon dissections of 150 human brains in which the arteries of interest were selectively injected. A propos to this anatomic-angiographic correlation the authors also describe the vascular territories of each cortical branch and propose a simple procedure for the evaluation of these territories during cerebral angiography.

[Tension-volume relationship of the wall of the isolated right ventricle].

The variations of tension on the wall of the isolated right verticle have been observed on 18 dogs. The Tension/Volume curve we got can be superimposed to that obtained by pressures. The wall of the right ventricle itself (the radius of the curve in the cavity and the wall-thickness) seems to vary only with the changes in its tension in a rather small part of the curve.

Embolization of an intraparotid false aneurysm of the external carotid artery: case report.

A case of posttraumatic false aneurysm of the terminal part of the main external carotid artery involving the entire parotid gland is presented. Embolization with two microcoils allowed immediate thrombosis of the false aneurysm. The lumen of the external carotid artery remained open. Facial paralysis resolved. The atypical clinical presentation and the therapeutic steps in such a case are described.
