Check-ups after tours of duty to the tropics.

Out-patient check-ups of 603 persons returning from an average of 2 years and 8 months tour of duty to the tropics were completed in 99.3%. Only 14 (2.3%) cases of strictly tropical disorders were detected, but no serious disease. A long-term (3-5 years) follow-up questionnaire revealed no additional cases. It is concluded that check-up of asymptomatic travellers has a very low benefit-cost rate.

Clinical aspects of outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning during air travel.

An outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning among 364 charter-flight passengers and crew members is described. Symptoms appeared just before landing, about an hour after a meal containing contaminated ham had been served. 143 passengers were admitted to hospital. 1 patient developed acute anuria and 1 had hemiplegia and aphasia; both recovered. Fever and bloody stools were recorded with unusual frequency.
