[Monitoring of patients with primary chronic open-angle glaucoma].

Compliance to examinations performed in a specialised department was studied in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma. A total of 429 case reports from patients treated from 1974 to 1977 were analyzed, follow up being for a period of up to 7 years. Examinations were performed two or three times a year and any patient who didn't return for two consecutive years was considered as lost. The number of lost patients was very few, about 10 percent a year, and this did not increase during the whole follow-up period. Overall, compliance was not related to sex. However, a higher proportion of women were lost between the second and third year of follow up. The distance between patient's homes and the medical center, near or far away, was not significant. As expected, a higher proportion of patients over sixty were lost after one year of follow up.

Long-term treatment with timolol ophthalmic solution in open-angle glaucoma.

A preselected population of 96 patients (67 glaucomas, 29 ocular hypertensions) were followed for an average period of 30 months. Timolol eye drops were administered either alone, in dosage strengths of 0.25 or 0.5% or in combination with other antiglaucoma drugs. 9 patients were lost to follow-up after a mean treatment duration of 15.3 months; glaucoma had been stabilized in all of them. 10 patients had unsatisfactory intraocular pressure control and 7 had to undergo trabeculectomy (9 of these 10 patients had campimetric glaucoma at the beginning of the study), whereas 76 patients had satisfactory intraocular pressure control and, in the majority, stabilization of glaucoma had been obtained. In 77% of this preselected population glaucoma was stabilized over a period of 3 years (i.e. close to two thirds of those starting treatment, 70% of which had campimetric glaucoma).

Glaucoma↗

[Use of timolol in treatment of increased intra-ocular pressure following surgery of congenital glaucoma (author's transl)].

In 16 patients from 9 to 34 year old, whose intraocular pressure remained elevated after a surgical procedure against congenital glaucoma, a timolol collyriam of 0.25 or 0.50 concentration was used as first topic treatment. Success was obtained only in 15% of the cuses. Better result followed systemic use of sulfonamid together with timolol. Nevertheless, medical treatment of these residual overpressures is still difficult. It showld be controlled every three months, paying much attention to the diary intraocular pressure curve.

Adolescent↗

[A new beta-blocking agent in the treatment of chronic open-angle glaucoma: timolol maleate. Effect of instillation of 1 drop on the intraocular pressure].

A total of 45 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma were divided randomly into three groups of fifteen. Each patient in each group was given one drop into one eye (the other eye serving as a control), of either placebo, timolol 0,5%, or timolol 1,5%. The patients were observed for a period of seven hours, and results showed that timolol was effective in reducing ocular tension when compared to placebo. It was also rapid in action (one to two hours after instillation), and no side-effects were noted. Timolol 0,5% appears to be as equally effective as the 1,5% strength.

Adolescent↗

[Results of a double-blind medium-term study comparing effects of timolol maleate and epinephrine in 120 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma].

A double-blind medium term study of the activity of timolol in chronic open-angle glaucoma was conducted in four French ophthalmological centers, using the same protocol. A total of 119 patients were treated: --60 with timolol; --59 with épinéphrine, for comparison. Results showed a significantly superior efficacy for timolol over épinéphrine, after in weeks of treatment. Good tonometric control was obtained in 81.6% of the patients treated with timolol, against 52.5% of those receiving épinéphrine. In 68% of the glaucomatons patients treated with timolol, good tonometric control was obtained with the lowest dose preparation containing 0.1%. No side-effects were noted during the study, either locally or generally (particularly blood pressure changes).

Chronic Disease↗

[Effect of daily instillations of timolol on the nycthemeral tension in subjects with chronic open-angle glaucoma (author's transl)].

This study included 22 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma who were treated with either 0.25% or 0.5% timolol. The results showed that a single daily instillation of 0.25% or 0.5% timolol was effective, without producing any side-effects. It was interesting to note that timolol caused the tension peaks to disappear, the nycthemeral graph curve becoming plateau-shaped.

Adult↗

[Timolol maleate: results of its long-term action in the treatment of chronic primary open-angle glaucoma].

Three groups of patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma, who had ineluded in the previous study, had been treated with timolol twice daily for more than a year. The long-term results confirm the efficacity noted in the medium-term survey, and the absence of side-effects, especially those related to the pulse rate and blood pressure in some of the patients. Drug associations had been necessary:--pilocarpin,--acetazolamid, seem to have the best synergic action with timolol.
