Excretory urography as a screening method for abnormalities of the upper urinary tract in asymptomatic boys with undescended testicles.

Congenital dystopic testicles frequently occur jointly with abnormalities of the kidneys and the system of draining urinary ducts. A series of 100 asymptomatic boys has been studied by intravenous excretory urography after having undergone orchiopexy for retained testes. All children were clinically non-suspect and there was no history of urinary tract malformation. The investigations brought to light 7 major and 9 minor abnormalities. However, the authors do not recommend the use of intravenous urography as a routine procedure in all children with undescended testicles. The indications of the diagnostic procedure must be limited.

Nutritional support in an inpatient rehabilitation unit.

Twenty-four patients with protein-calorie malnutrition were treated with intensive dietary support to improve nutritional status. Sixteen patients were able to ingest a mean of 1,945kcal and 77gm protein per 24 hours. Eight patients were unable to consume sufficient protein (11 gm) and kcal (311 gm) per 24 hours; these patients were treated with enteral tube feeding. Patients supported on tube feeding increased serum albumin levels by 0.5gm/100ml and were eventually able to consume 2,170kcal and 87gm of protein per 24-hour period after tube feeding was discontinued. Treatment of patients with protein-calorie malnutrition may require a multiple-modality nutritional support system in a rehabilitation unit.

[Total gastrectomy in cancer of the stomach (author's transl)].

143 cases of total gastrectomy in cancer of the stomach from 1961 to 1976 are reported. A satisfactory function is observed in long living patients having a substitute stomach formation ("Ringplastik") as well as in those having been operated according to the method of Graham. The rare occurrence of reflux oesophagitis is attributed to a special technique for anastomosis.

[Spontaneous immuno-adherence in viral hepatitis].

Sera from patients with hepatitis, according to clinical and biochemical data, often give a spontaneous immune adherence (S.I.A.) with O human red blood cells. In 58% of the cases the test is positive and is associated with Australia (HBs) antigen in 6.7 to 9.5% of the patients. The titer cas reach 1/8192 and seems to follow the clinical evolution. S.I.A. also occurs at low titre (less than or equal to 1/32) in 18 to 30% of the cirrhosis tested, in 17 to 22% of various diseases and in 0 to 16% of different neoplasia. In spite of the fact that S.I.A. is not specific in its principle, it may be useful as a complementary test for detection and monitoring of viral hepatitis.
