S.A.M., the Italian Martian simulation chamber.

The Martian Environment Simulator (SAM "Simulatore di Ambiente Marziano") is a interdisciplinary project of Astrobiology done at University of Padua. The research is aimed to the study of the survival of the microorganisms exposed to the "extreme" planetary environment. The facility has been designed in order to simulate Mars' environmental conditions in terms of atmospheric pressure, temperature cycles and UV radiation dose. The bacterial cells, contained into dedicated capsules, will be exposed to thermal cycles simulating diurnal and seasonal Martian cycles. The metabolism of the different biological samples will be analysed at different phases of the experiment, to study their survival and eventual activity of protein synthesis (mortality, mutations and capability of DNA repairing). We describe the experimental facility and provide the perspectives of the biological experiments we will perform in order to provide hints on the possibility of life on Mars either autochthonous or imported from Earth.

Supernumerary teeth and mental retardation: the importance of early surgical intervention.

AIM: This paper reported a rare case of hyperdontia in a child of 10 years who revealed a mixed dentition and a light mental retardation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The therapeutic approach has been based on interdisciplinary cooperation between the pediatric dentist, orthodontist and oral surgeon. TC-Dentascan, with a panoramic and occlusal radiographs revealed the presence of two supernumerary teeth in the premaxillary region and clinical examination showed an abnormality of dentoalveolar complex. Both impacted supernumerary teeth were extracted under general anesthesia. Clinical examination revealed that they appeared two premolars in shape with fully formed crowns and partly formed roots. RESULTS: Three months after the extraction of supernumerary teeth there was a spontaneous eruption of permanent central incisors and left lateral incisor. CONCLUSION: The authors emphasized the importance of removal of supernumerary teeth to eliminate the cause of a delayed eruption of permanent teeth.

A case of an unerupted maxillary central incisor for indirect trauma localized horizontally on the anterior nasal spine.

The present paper emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of retarded eruption because of trauma and the plan for the surgical management of impacted teeth. The permanent incisor was localized horizontally on the nasal spine and the roots seemed to be in a retarded stage of formation beside of contralateral tooth. The treatment plan consisted in the valuation of the necessity of space to move the impacted incisor in the normal position and the biomechanical approach for the anchorage.

SEM analysis of zirconium brackets using MIM technology.

AIM: The need to be able to use a material with esthetic characteristics of ceramic and mechanical properties of the metallic brackets has led clinical and industrial research towards the realization of zirconium brackets. These brackets seem to respond to both the requirements of new esthetic concepts and of interesting biomechanical qualities: hardness, resistance to abrasion, resistance to compression, reduced coefficient of friction during mechanical sliding, stability in a humid temperature and to the aggression of oral fluids. METHODS: Twenty samples of zirconium brackets have been observed at SEM realized using the metal injection molding (MIM) technology: 10 new ones used as base samples and 10 used samples with the purpose of assessing the morphologic aspect and the structural variations after clinical use. RESULTS: The comparison the samples showed some structural changes regarding the surface of the body of the brackets, while slot and wings maintain an interesting stability of construction, a moderate degree of abrasion even after the application of considerable clinical strength. CONCLUSIONS: The conclusion is drawn that the positive clinical response in the use of these brackets and the limited scientific literature on the use of zirconium in orthodontics is worthy of further research.

Craniofacial and body growth: a cross-sectional anthropometric pilot study on children during prepubertal period.

AIM: This was to compare craniofacial and body growth during prepubertal period using direct medical anthropometry for body and craniofacial measurements. METHODS: The sample consisted of 100 patients (48 males, 52 females), aged between 7 and 12 years. Thirty craniofacial and body measurements of height, width, length and circumference were made on each subject. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Comparisons were made of averages, percentages and standard deviations, for three growth patterns during prepubertal period: cranial, facial and body growth pattern. Linear correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to evaluate the intensity of the interdependence between variables, using BMDP Dynamic software. RESULTS: Skull and face measurements increased less than body dimensions, but those for the face increased more than for skull, which was valid both for males and females. Differences between males and females were determined for standing height, mandibular height (T-Go) and lower facial height (Sto-Gn). CONCLUSIONS: No body parameter was found to be a good indicator of craniofacial growth during this period. The jaw was found to be the facial area that showed the higher development.

Management of obstructive sleep apnoea in children with modified monobloc appliances.

AIM: This was to investigate the effect of the use of an orthodontic appliance in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children using polysomnographic variables. METHODS: 10 boys and 10 girls with OSA aged between 4 to 8 years, referred from an otolaryngology clinic because of sleep apnoea, wore modified monobloc devices nightly for 6 months. Polysomnography was used for each patient for baseline diagnosis of OSA and also for post therapy assessment. RESULTS: The median obstructive apnoea- hypopnoea index decreased after 6 months of therapy with oral appliances. The mean (+/-SD) number of episodes of OSA was 7.88+/-1.81 before treatment and 3.66+/-6.80 after 6 months (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The modified monobloc appliance is suggested for use in children with OSA and may be an effective therapeutic alternative in children with mild to moderate OSA.

Case report: severe infraocclusion ankylosis occurring in siblings.

AIM: This was to report a rare case of strong familiar tendency of ankylosis of maxillary second primary molars. CASE REPORT: Three Caucasian children, male twins of 8.5 years and a sister of 10 years, were diagnosed as having severely infraccluded maxillary second primary molars with underlying second premolars. In all three cases, the early extraction of the infraoccluded molars and an active treatment with cervical extraoral traction allowed the physiologic eruption of second premolars. Follow-up showed that normal vertical relationship and bone height had been obtained. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis, as well as appropriate treatment and careful follow-up are very important in the presence of severe infraocclusion, when the marginal ridge of affected primary teeth is at or below gingival level.

Case report: two nasal floor compound odontomas associated with impacted maxillary incisor.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to describe the logical sequence of treatment in a case of a six year old caucasian female patient with two nasal floor compound odontomas, that delayed eruption of a maxillary permanent incisor. TREATMENT: The odontomas were surgically removed. However, as the maxillary incisor did not erupt spontaneously, after a suitable period of observation, an orthodontic treatment approach was adopted. This was to obtain an adequate space for the unerupted tooth and to move it to its normal position. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and surgical intervention of supernumeraries is therefore necessary and treatment of an impacted tooth may require an orthodontic appliance.

Rapid palatal expansion in mixed dentition using a modified expander: a cephalometric investigation.

The aims of this investigation were to cephalometrically study the short-term skeletal and dental modifications induced by rapid palatal expansion in a sample of 20 patients (10 male, 10 female), aged 6-10 years (mean age 8 years) in mixed dentition with a uni- or bilateral posterior crossbite, a mild skeletal Class II malocclusion, and an increased vertical dimension (FMA, SN/\GoGn), and to compare them with an untreated matched control group of 20 subjects (10 male and 10 female), mean age 8 years. Cephalometric analysis showed that the maxilla displayed a tendency to rotate downwards and backward, resulting in a statistically significant increase of the SN/\PP angle (T0 = 9*95 degrees, T1 = 11*60 degrees, P < 0*01) and the SN-ANS linear value (T0 = 49*50 mm, T1 = 51*10 mm, P < 0*05). In addition, there was a statistically significant alteration of the anterior total facial height N-Me (T0 = 113*15mm, T1 = 114*15 mm, P < 0*05) and for the dental upper molar measurement U6-PP (T0 = 19*70 mm, T1 = 20*30 mm, P < 0*05). The small alterations found in the anterior total facial height and in the sagittal angles agree with previous studies, and suggest that RPE can be also used in subjects with a tendency to vertical growth and a skeletal Class II malocclusion.

[A clinical analysis of a group of Down's patients].

The authors report their experience of the clinical analysis of 40 handicapped subjects: 28 suffered from various degrees of mental handicap and 12 had Down's syndrome. In particular, the authors focused their attention on anomalies of the stomatognathic apparatus in Down subjects, and examined and compared all those factors which are normally attributed to this pathology. An analysis of these findings shows a heterogeneity of clinical conditions which is not revealed in the literature. In the light of these new experiences, before applying pre-programmed protocols in Down's patients it is important to carry out a careful control of their dental, muscular and functional situation together with the prospects for growth and development.

[Latero-lateral teleradiography of the head. Natural "controlled" position].

The Authors give forth a method to realize a profile radiograph in natural head position. This method considers the corner between the anterior border of the auricolar arm and the Camper plane. This angle always allows to reproduce natural head position like in the first profile radiograph. The Authors call this natural position: "natural controlled head position".
