Purification of a p47 phosphoprotein from Xenopus laevis oocytes and identification as an in vivo and in vitro p34cdc2 substrate.

This paper describes the purification of a 47 kDa protein from Xenopus laevis oocytes that becomes phosphorylated when the oocytes undergo meiotic maturation. This protein (p47) is part of a high molecular mass complex containing at least two other proteins of molecular mass 30 and 36 kDa. This complex can be isolated from stage VI oocytes before maturation. We obtained a pattern for phosphopeptides in p47 phosphorylated in vivo very similar to that of the purified protein phosphorylated in vitro by p34cdc2 (a H1 kinase which is a component of the M-phase promoting factor) and [gamma-32P]ATP. Therefore, the purified p47, already described as a marker of MPF activity, is the first reported in vivo substrate for the cell division control kinase.

Involvement of protein kinase A and casein kinase II in the in vivo protein kinase activities in prophase arrested Xenopus oocytes.

In vivo beta casein phosphorylation was analysed in Xenopus full-grown oocytes arrested in the prophase of the meiotic cell division. The phosphorylation was inhibited by the protein kinase inhibitor (PKI) and also by heparin (3 micrograms/ml; final concentration). beta casein phosphorylation was increased by spermine (2 mM). Therefore, protein kinase A and casein kinase II are both active in vivo in full-grown oocytes and may be involved in the prophase arrest of meiotic cell division.

A componential model for mental addition.

A componential model capable of representing simple and complex forms of mental addition was proposed and then tested by using chronometric techniques. A sample of 23 undergraduate students responded to 800 addition problems in a true-false reaction time paradigm. The 800 problems comprised 200 problems of each of four types: two single-digit addends, one single- and one double-digit addend, two double-digit addends, and three single-digit addends. The results revealed that the columnwise product of addends, a structural variable consistent with a memory network retrieval process, was the best predictor of mental addition for each of the four types of problem. Importantly, the componential model allowed estimation of effects of several other structural variables, e.g., carrying to the next column and speed of encoding of digits. High levels of explained variance verified the power of the model to represent the reaction time data, and the stability of estimates across types of problem implied consistent component use by subjects. Implications for research on mental addition are discussed.

[Hyperthermia during labor. Role of peridural analgesia].

Over a period of 4 months, the authors have observed 414 deliveries, including 30 which presented a hyperthermia exceeding or equal to 37.8 degrees C (7.2%). 27 hyperthermias occurred under peridural analgesia. The thermogenic effect of this loco-regional anesthesia seems debatable since it occurs at an early stage, is transient and has a peripheral effect. The fever noted during labor indicates, most of the time, an infection. Peridural analgesia is advocated in most primiparous patients as well as in imperative labor inducements. Sometimes, this permits accepting a longer-lasting labor, exposing the patient to the risk of amniotic infection.

[Prevention of infectious complications after cesarean section by the use of cefotetan].

A prospective, randomised study was carried out on 110 patients to find out the effect of giving Cefotetan prophylactically as against no treatment in the prevention of infections after cesarean sections. The cases were selected before or at the beginning of a trial of labour in 72 cases and after a failure of trial of labour in 38 cases. A single dose of 2 gr of Cefotetan was given during the operation, after the cord had been clamped. It caused a significant drop in infection and in particular the number of cases of endometritis and urinary tract infections, which were twice as common in the non-treated as compared with the treated group.

[Prevention using cefotetan of post-partum and post-abortion infectious complications in intra-uterine procedures].

A prospective, randomized study was conducted in 113 women to evaluate the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis with cefotetan versus no prophylaxis in the prevention of post-partum and post-abortion sepsis. The administration of a single 2 g dose of cefotetan at the time of surgery significantly reduced the number of infectious complications, removal of the placenta or an internal inspection were carried out.

The rural dental health program: the effect of a school-based, dental health education program on children's utilization of dental services.

Eighteen-hundred rural children ages five through thirteen were randomly assigned for dental treatment to a school-based practice, and to private practitioners in the community. Simultaneously, five of the nine public schools attended by the children offered an enriched program of dental education while the remaining schools taught the regular health education courses. All children participated in a school based fluoride program and their dental treatment was provided without charge. Data indicating how the children utilized dental services were collected over the three-year treatment phase of the study. Evidence from the third treatment year indicates that children assigned to the school based practice who also attended a school offering enriched dental health education used dental services on a more regular basis than children in the other three groups. Evidence obtained from log-linear modeling supports the hypothesis that dental health education had a positive effect on children's utilization of dental service.

[Results of assays of estrogen, progesterone and androgen receptors in stage I and II adenocarcinoma of the endometrium].

The prognosis for adenocarcinoma of the endometrium is dependent on the findings of the histopathological assessment of the tumor. In a retrospective study of patients treated in initially by surgery, the estrogen and progesterone receptors were assayed 89 times and the androgen receptors 64 times. No statistically significant correlation was found between any of these receptors and the degree of structural differentiation or degree of infiltration of the myometrium. The absence of any one of these receptors had no negative impact on the overall survival nor on recurrence-free survival. The same was true for the 9 tumors which were devoid of both estrogen and progesterone receptors. In the authors' experience, the results of these hormone assays did not provide any further information on which to base the prognosis of endometrial cancers.
