What proportion of newspaper stories about child molestation involves homosexuality.

Do homosexuals disproportionately molest children? A survey of 8 of the nation's newspaper news stories of child molestation during the first 9 months of 1995 showed that about 40% of child molestation stories in the major cities involve homosexuality. An Internet survey of FirstSearch for 1989 through 1995 indicated 46%, and of Newsbank for 1990 through 1995 60% of molestations were homosexual. About half of teachers, day care workers and other professionals caught molesting children assaulted them homosexually. It is argued that large unbiased sets of newspaper news stories appear to approximate the figures for incidence of child molestation by those occupying a newsworthy status but overreport homosexual molestation in general.

Homosexual parents: a comparative forensic study of character and harms to children.

40 appeals cases of custody disputes drawn systematically from all cases involving a homosexual parent in the United States were compared to 38 appeals cases involving heterosexual custody disputes drawn randomly from listings under parental "character" and 18 appeals cases drawn randomly from "general" cases in Dicennial Digest from 1966 to 1991. Each case involving homosexual vs heterosexual claimants was examined for recorded information about (1) the character of the homosexual parent, the associates of the homosexual parent, the heterosexual parent, and the associates of the heterosexual parent, (2) the effects, particularly harms, upon the child(ren), and (3) psychiatric opinion. 82% of the homosexual vs 18% of the heterosexual parents and 54% of the homosexual's associates vs 19% of the heterosexuals' associates were recorded as having poor character in cases involving a homosexual claimant. Of the 66 recorded harms, e.g., molestation, physical abuse, to the 73 children, homosexual persons accounted for 64 (97%). Of the 32 lesbians, 6 were recorded as having engaged in criminal activity and 3 of bringing false charges of child sexual abuse against the father. Psychiatric opinion, however, ran 25 to 12 in favor of custody for the homosexual parent. In the 56 heterosexual vs heterosexual comparison cases, 38% of the heterosexual parents and 28% of their associates were recorded as having poor character. Six harms to their 105 children and 3 instances of criminality but no false charges of sexual abuse were recorded. In the appeals court literature, homosexual parents were disproportionately of poor character and disproportionately associated with various harms to their children.

Does homosexual activity shorten life?

Previous estimates from obituaries and pre-1994 sex surveys suggested that the median age of death for homosexuals is less than 50 yr. Four contemporary databases were used to test that estimate: (1) obituaries in the homosexual press from 1993 through 1997 reflected treatment success for those with AIDS but suggested a median age of death less than 50 years; (2) two large random sexuality surveys in 1994--one in the USA and the other in Britain--yielded results consistent with a median age of death for homosexuals of less than 50 years; (3) the median age of those ever married in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway was about 50 years, while that of the ever homosexually partnered was about 40 yr; further, the married were about 5 times more apt to be old and 4 times less apt to be widowed young; and (4) intravenous drug abusers and homosexuals taking HIV tests in Colorado had almost identical age distributions. The four lines of evidence were consistent with previous findings suggesting that homosexual activity may be associated with a lifespan shortened by 20 to 30 years.

Did the APA misrepresent the scientific literature to courts in support of homosexual custody?

In 1994, American Psychological Association amicus briefs informed two state Supreme Courts that (a) homosexual parents are not more apt to have homosexual children; (b) lesbians "score significantly higher than heterosexual parents" on a measure of parental effectiveness; and (c) no differences between the children raised by homosexuals and nonhomosexuals had been found "regardless of the geographic region within the United States where the children were raised." In fact, the evidence from these briefs shows to the contrary that (a) homosexual parents are more apt to have homosexual children; (b) the findings on parental effectiveness consisted of 15 fathers being less verbal than 45 mothers; and (c) the finding of no differences between homosexually and heterosexually raised children consisted of investigators visiting 11 states to test 89 offspring of 83 lesbian vs. 81 children of 69 nonlesbian volunteers. The APA's support for gay rights in these briefs may have violated its own ethical principles that "psychologists base their statements on scientifically acceptable psychological findings and techniques with full recognition of the limits and uncertainties of such evidence" and that psychologists must "provide thorough discussion of the limitations of their data, especially where their work touches on social policy" (APA, 1981).

Building community networks: a road trauma education and training program for rural areas.

The work of the Road Trauma Support Team highlights the ongoing impact of road trauma on rural communities. Small population size and close social networks mean that road trauma can have a negative effect on social relations across the whole community. Much of the 'flow-on' effect of road trauma, in the form of community distress, can be alleviated by increased skills, information about responding to road trauma, and the establishment of supportive community networks. This paper reports on the implementation and evaluation of a project that addressed knowledge, skills and awareness of road trauma in rural communities. Funded by the Rural Health Support Education and Training (RHSET) program and conducted by the Road Trauma Support Team, the project focused on the impact of traumatic events in small communities and strategies to maximise effective participation of community members and health workers in response to trauma. Piloted in six rural communities in northern Tasmania, the project has developed an educational resource package.

Demography of assault in a provincial Victorian population.

The study examined the frequency and patterns of assault within a large regional population of Victoria. The records of 860 victims of physical assault who presented to the Geelong Hospital emergency department during 1993 and 1994 were analysed retrospectively. The policy data on 1427 reported cases of physical assault, from the same catchment area and over a similar period of time, were also examined. The hospital data revealed that 65 per cent of assault victims were males aged from 15 to 34 years, that 58 per cent of presentations were within four hours of midnight, and 68 per cent were on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Most assaults occurred on the streets, on footpaths, in open spaces or within dwellings, and the highest incidence was during the summer months. The police data showed similar patterns but from a different population of victims. It also showed an upward trend in the rates of assault in Victorian regional areas. The award-winning Geelong 'Local Industry Accord', a police and community intervention program, may have contributed to the decline in violence, particularly within the Geelong city centre, and has been suggested as a model for other community-based intervention programs. For intervention programs to be successful, the demography of assault within communities must be established and target groups identified. Hospital, police and victim surveys data do not identify accurately the population of assault victims. Improved methods of data collection and compatibility between databases already in existence may provide more accurate statistics upon which intervention programs may be based and their success evaluated.

Dendritic cells and the replication of HIV-1.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a distinct lineage of white cells that arise from CD34+ progenitors in the bone marrow. DCs exhibit many specializations that lead to efficient antigen capture and presentation to T cells, both CD4+ helpers and CD8+ killers. In several human tissues, DCs express the CD4 receptor for HIV-1. Some early reports described the explosive infection of blood-derived DCs by HIV-1 and a severe compromise of their presenting function. In contrast, other studies described active HIV-1 replication when DCs were interacting with CD4+ T cells. This productive infection could begin with a low viral burden in DCs but required that the DCs retain their normal binding and stimulatory function for T cells. In this review we first summarize those features of the DC system that seem pertinent to HIV-1 infection. Then we consider the current literature on the interaction of HIV-1 with DCs, from several different tissues, in HIV-1-infected patients or following challenge with HIV-1 in vitro. The literature leads to the hypothesis that HIV-1 infection is a battleground in which DCs could be leading both of the armies, the aggressor that promotes HIV-1 replication from relatively small numbers of infected cells and the defender that mediates T cell-dependent resistance.

Failure to agree on the electrocardiographic diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of interobserver agreement in the ECG diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia (VT) by using a four-step algorithm and three observers. METHODS: Simulated emergency department setting from records of an urban university teaching hospital. All ECGs taken in the ED during a 2-year period that showed a QRS duration of more than 120 msec and a heart rate faster than 110 beats per minute were reviewed. ECGs were categorized as demonstrating sinus rhythm (SR), irregular broad-complex tachycardia (I-BCT), or regular broad-complex tachycardia (BCT). Copies of the BCT ECGs and short clinical histories were given to each of three emergency physicians, who used a published, four-step algorithm (the Brugada algorithm) to categorize the BCT ECGs as indicating VT, indicating supraventricular tachycardia with aberrancy (SVT-A), or indeterminate. Interobserver agreement was assessed with the K-statistic. RESULTS: The records contained 178 ECGs, 88 of which were SR, 63 I-BCT, and 27 BCT. The 27 BCT ECGs were selected for review. The emergency physicians disagreed with each other 22% of the time in differentiating VT from SVT-A (K = .58). CONCLUSION: Application of the algorithm to actual clinical practice in the ED would probably result in the misdiagnosis of a substantial minority of patients having BCT, with potentially serious adverse consequences.

Do homosexual teachers pose a risk to pupils?

Questionnaires were completed by 5,182 adults derived from one-wave area cluster samples in 6 metropolitan areas: 56% of homosexuals and 18% of heterosexuals reported having had a homosexual teacher, 12% of the men and 4% of the women said that the teacher made sexual advances toward them. A fifth of those with a homosexual teacher said they were influenced to regard homosexuality as socially acceptable; 4% said that the teacher influenced them to try homosexuality. About 1% of the sample reported that, as pupils, they had sexual relations with at least one of their elementary or secondary teachers. Eight respondents reported their first sexual experience was with an elementary or secondary teacher and that one of these experiences was homosexual. Of 49 other reported sexual experiences with teachers, 12 were homosexual. The findings that homosexuals more frequently claimed to have had homosexual teachers and more frequently reported homosexual sex with teachers tend to fit the contagion model of homosexuality--that homosexuality is taught by or caught by sexual interaction with homosexual practitioners.

Rib fractures in major trauma.

BACKGROUND: To determine the mortality, hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) stay of rib fractures in patients admitted to Victorian hospitals for more than 1 day. METHODS: All patients fitting the entry criteria for the Victorian Major Trauma Study with fractured ribs were identified between 1 March 1992 and 28 February 1993. Aetiology, age, sex, associated injury and outcome were analysed. RESULTS: Patients with rib fractures had a higher mortality and length of hospital stay, but this was not significantly different from other trauma. A significantly higher percentage of patients required ICU care for rib fractures (44%) compared with the total group with blunt injury (24%). The majority of rib fractures resulted from motor vehicle accidents 361/541 (67%). Injuries occurring on the street/highway resulting in rib fractures were more likely to be major; 62% had Injury Severity Score (ISS) > 15. Fractured ribs occurred more commonly with increased age. Mortality for patients with fractured ribs versus total trauma group was higher in elderly patients. Univariate analysis showed rib fractures were a positive predictor of death but when adjusted for ISS and age, rib fractures became a negative predictor. Rib fractures were not predictors for length of ICU or hospital stay. CONCLUSION: The sample of rib fractures collected in this study underestimates the overall incidence. For those patients admitted to hospital with identified rib fractures, there is a trend towards higher mortality and morbidity. However, this association is better predicted by ISS and age.

Rab11 is an apically located small GTP-binding protein in epithelial tissues.

Rab proteins are involved in many aspects of dynamic vesicle processing within eukaryotic cells. We have previously identified Rab11 in gastric parietal cell tubulovesicle membranes. We have produced a monoclonal antibody that is specific for Rab11. In all rabbit tissues examined, Rab11 immunoreactivity was highly enriched in epithelial cells. In the gastric fundus, parietal cells were stained in a pattern consistent with localization on tubulovesicles. Surface mucous cells of both the fundus and antrum demonstrated punctate subapical staining. Ileal and proximal colonic enterocyte labeling was observed deep to the brush borders. In the distal colon, staining was observed in the apical regions of mid-crypt cells. In skin and esophagus, punctate immunoreactivity was present in the medial layers of the squamous epithelia. Prominent Rab11 immunoreactivity was present in hepatocytes deep to the bile canaliculi. Punctate subapical staining was observed in pancreatic acinar cells. Apical staining was also observed in collecting duct cells and in the glandular cells of the prostate. These results indicate the Rab11 is expressed in apical vesicular populations in discrete epithelial cell populations.

Errors by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Educational, Association in representing homosexuality in amicus briefs about Amendment 2 to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In October 1995, consortiums of psychiatric and educational profes sional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association and the National Educational Association, submitted amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court asserting that the scientific literature unequivocally supports the following propositions (a) that homosexuals, including homosexual teachers, do not disproportionately molest children, (b) that children of homosexual patients are not more likely to become homosexuals, (c) that professionals agree that homosexuality is not a pathology, and (d) that homosexual attractions are biologically or genetically predetermined and are therefore beyond the control of the individual. The first two contentions are inconsistent with the scientific literature, and the second two grossly oversimplify a contentious and uncertain literature.

Homosexual parents.

Does the homosexuality of parents affect the sexual orientation or experiences of their children? Seventeen of 5,182 randomly obtained adults from six U.S. cities answered questionnaires indicating that they had a homosexual parent. Parental homosexuality may be related to findings that: (1) 5 of the 17 reported sexual relations with their parents; (2) a disproportionate fraction reported sexual relations with other caretakers and relatives; and (3) a disproportionate fraction: (a) claimed a less than exclusively heterosexual orientation (47%); (b) indicated gender dissatisfaction; and (c) reported that their first sexual experience was homosexual. Of 1,388 consecutive obituaries in a major homosexual newspaper, 87 of the gays who died had children and registered a median age of death of 47 (the 1,267 without children had a median age of death of 38); 10 lesbians did and 24 did not have children. We estimate that less than 1% of parents are bisexual or homosexual and that < 7% of gays and about a third of lesbians are parents.

The envA permeability/cell division gene of Escherichia coli encodes the second enzyme of lipid A biosynthesis. UDP-3-O-(R-3-hydroxymyristoyl)-N-acetylglucosamine deacetylase.

The envA gene of Escherichia coli has been shown previously to be essential for cell viability (Beall, B. and Lutkenhaus, J. (1987) J. Bacteriol. 169, 5408-5415), yet it encodes a protein of unknown function. Extracts of strains harboring the mutant envA1 allele display 3.5-18-fold reductions in UDP-3-O-acyl-N-acetylglucosamine deacetylase specific activity. The deacetylase is the second enzymatic step of lipid A biosynthesis. The structural gene coding for the deacetylase has not been assigned. In order to determine if the envA gene encodes the deacetylase, envA was cloned into an isopropyl-1-thio-beta-D-galactopyranoside-inducible T7-based expression system. Upon induction, a protein of the size of envA was highly overproduced, as judged by SDS-PAGE. Direct deacetylase assays of cell lysates revealed a concomitant approximately 5,000-fold overproduction of activity. Assays of the purified, overproduced EnvA protein demonstrated a further approximately 5-fold increase in specific activity. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of the purified protein showed that the first 20 amino acids matched the predicted envA nucleotide sequence. Contaminating species were present at less than 1% of the level of the EnvA protein. Thus, envA is the structural gene for UDP-3-O-acyl-GlcNAc deacetylase. Based on its function in lipid A biosynthesis, we propose the new designation lpxC for this gene.

Mediation by HLA-DM of dissociation of peptides from HLA-DR.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DM is an unconventional major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II heterodimer that is important for B-cell-mediated antigen processing and presentation to MHC class II-restricted T cells. HLA-DM is encoded by two genes, DMA and DMB, which map to the MHC class II region, and shares some homology with MHC class I and class II proteins. Here we define the biochemical role of HLA-DM. Recombinant soluble HLA-DM heterodimers have been purified from culture supernatants of insect cell transformants. At pH 5.0, they induce the dissociation of a subset of peptides bound to HLA-DR, including a nested set of class-II-associated invariant chain peptides (CLIP). This process liberates HLA-DR and leads to the enhanced binding of exogenous peptides.

Education for change in a post-modern world: redefining revolution.

Social and behavioural sciences are established components in the curriculum of undergraduate nursing degrees. The purpose is to introduce future and practising nurses to the social and political influences which inform their workplaces and practices. Inevitably an awareness of the structural barriers and the powerful political interests involved in health can lead to feelings of powerlessness and despair of achieving change. Yet the skills of critical analysis and political awareness developed in study such as this are essential for health workers in the increasingly complex and politically charged domain in which they work. This paper will explore problems and barriers encountered in development of curriculum and teaching social and behavioural sciences in health. It will propose an alternative conceptual model, based on post-structuralism, as one way of addressing these barriers. This approach shifts the focus from meta-theoretical sociological concepts such as class, gender and culture, to one of examining subject positions, discourse, contestation and local action, thus enabling the exploration and development of possibilities for change. The paper will also provide a case study to illustrate this alternative approach.

Major trauma in Australia: a regional analysis.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the frequency, distribution, cause, pattern, and outcome of patients suffering from major trauma in the State of Victoria over a 1-year period. No previous study in Australia has attempted a comprehensive regional analysis of major trauma. All major trauma admissions resulting from blunt, penetrating, and burns injury were identified, and data collected from emergency departments and intensive care log books at 25 major metropolitan and rural hospitals from the January 3, 1992 to February 28, 1993 by onsite data collectors. The total number of patients admitted into the study was 2,944. There were 1,076 major trauma cases with an Injury Severity Score greater than 15 in a population of 4.2 million people. The type of injury was predominantly blunt (87.5%), with only a small percentage of penetrating injuries (6.4%) and burns (6%). Major trauma in pediatric cases is less common (132 cases). The most common causes of injury were road transport (56%) and falls (22%). The overall outcome of the group was favorable when compared with the Major Trauma Outcome Study group (Z = 1.4, M = 0.93, W = 0.52). There was an unexpectedly low number of patients suffering from major trauma. Outcome using Trauma and Injury Severity Score methodology was favorable when compared with North America.
