Cutaneous fiber groups involved in the inhibition of fictive locomotion in the rabbit.

Decorticate, paralyzed unanaesthetized rabbit preparations can display motoneuron discharges (spontaneous or elicited through various somatic stimulations) which are related to locomotion. These activities are suppressed when manual pressure is exerted on the dorso-lumbar skin. The present study indicates that: (1) locomotor discharges can also be inhibited through repetitive electrical stimulation of one of the skin nerves belonging to dorsal dermatomes (TH5 to L5); (2) other skin nerves, especially those of the limbs, do not present the same inhibitory properties; (3) among the various fiber groups composing these dorsal skin nerves, only A delta are inhibitory; other groups, on the contrary, display moderate (A alpha and A beta) or strong (unmyelinated C fibers) excitatory actions; (4) the inhibitory action of A delta fibers counteracts the excitatory action of C fibers, when both groups are stimulated together. The relationship between this form of motor inhibition and the well known phenomenon of "reflex immobility" is briefly considered.

Sulfinpyrazone and postoperative deep vein thrombosis.

Small doses of subcutaneous heparin and infusions of dextran both reduce the incidence of fatal pulmonary embolism after elective general surgery. But both methods have disadvantages. Therefore, the protection against deep vein thrombosis afforded by sulfinpyrazone, a drug which can be taken by mouth as well as by injection, was assessed in a prospective study of 119 patients undergoing elective general or urological surgery. The prophylactic administration of sulfinpyrazone was compared with the effects of small doses of sodium heparin and infusions of dextran-70. The 125I-fibrinogen test was carried out in all patients during their hospitalization. Deep vein thrombosis was diagnosed in 13 of 30 patients (43%) who received sulfinpyrazone, in 9 of 29 (31%) receiving dextran-70 and in 2 of 22 (9%) having subcutaneous heparin. The difference between the sulfinpyrazone and heparin groups was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Sulfinpyrazone in the dose used in this trial was not effective in reducing the incidence of deep vein thrombosis during elective general surgery.

[Projections of the cortical visual areas of the posterior gyrus sigmoid and the caudate nucleus in the cat].

The complex performances of the visuo-motor system entail probably an intervention of circuits connecting, the primary visual areas, to other cortical regions, specially the sensory motor cortex, and certain sub-cortical formations. For testing this hypothesis, the unilateral resection of the areas 17, 18 and 19 has been undertaken on 19 cats, with delays ranging from 8 days to 3 months after intervention. The tracing of the pathways was carried out by combining different degenerating methods in particular the Marchi reaction. Based on this, it is possible to define a compact bundle of the axons originating from the primary visual cortex and dividing into two fascicles of unequal magnitude. The slender ends in the lower part of the posterior gyrus sigmoïd; the larger one penetrates into the caudale nucleus. An ultrastructural study specifies the modalities of distribution of the axons within this nucleus.

A study of geniculate unit activity during cryogenic blockade of the primary visual cortex in the cat.

In cats under nembutal or chloralose anesthesia, unilateral temporary cryogenic blockades of the primary visual cortex were performed and their influence on unitary responses to restricted light spots was tested in the ipsilateral geniculate nucleus. No significant effect could thus be observed, at variance with previous positive results obtained by our group in structures like superior colliculus and pulvinar complex using the same experimental procedure.

From attentiveness to sleep. A topographical analysis of localized "synchronized" activities on the cortex of normal cat and monkey.

In normal implanted cats, squirel monkeys and baboons, various types of localized rhythms can be identified in somatic area I and in the visual zone. Their relation to levels of attentiveness, alertness or drowsiness, and their possible correspondence to human EEG activities, wicket or mu rhythms and occipital alpha rhythms is considered. Subcortical recordings tend to show that these rhythms correspond to distinct thalamo-cortical systems, involving different thalamic nuclei.
