Relationship between the proliferation of keratinocytes cultured in vitro and prostaglandin E2.

In the growth of keratinocytes "in vitro", PGE2 seems to play an important role. We have shown that in fibroblast-keratinocyte co-cultures, indomethacin, employed at concentrations which inhibit the PGE2 synthesis, reduced the proliferation of epidermal cells. This effect was reversed by an exogenous PGE2 addition to the culture media. To better understand the relationship between keratinocytes and the autacoid, we have tested PGE2 at various concentrations in different cultural conditions, that is, epidermal cells were grown on a 3T3-J2 feeder layer, without fibroblasts and with a 3T3-J2 conditioned medium. We observed an increase in keratinocyte proliferation induced by the autacoid alone in the presence of fibroblasts, while a severe inhibitory effect was relieved when dermal cells or the conditioning medium were absent. The lack of fibroblasts and their products in the culture medium modified the morphology of keratinocytes cultured in vitro. PGE2 induced significant morphological and morphometrical variations only if added to the conditioning medium. The autacoid decreased the expression of 66 kDa protein, if cells were grown in the presence of fibroblasts or with conditioning medium, whereas it completely inhibited this keratin and those of 60, 54 kDa if cells were cultured only with a basal medium. From morphometrical and electrophoretical data we can suppose that PGE2 inhibits cell differentiation. Thus PGE2 action on keratinocytes seems to be strictly related to the presence of dermal cells.

Unequal amplitude saccades produced by aniseikonic patterns: effects of viewing distance.

This study describes differences in horizontal and vertical disconjugate saccades under far and close viewing conditions of two dichoptically presented aniseikonic random checkerboard patterns. At far viewing, disconjugacy of horizontal saccades requiring divergence was accomplished intrasaccadically after several minutes; for convergence the intrasaccadic disconjugacy was limited. Size differences partially persisted in open-loop trials. At close viewing intrasaccadic divergent changes in conjugacy were instantaneous, but motor storage during open-loop was absent. It is concluded that disconjugate saccades to targets at far distance lead to an adaptation process, whereas at close viewing distance horizontal disparity is a visual compensation process used directly to scale the relative amplitudes of both eyes, not leading to adaptation. The time-course of disconjugate vertical saccades was much slower, with mostly postsaccadic vergence. Nearby viewing enhanced the disconjugacy of vertical saccades.

Unequal saccades produced by aniseikonic patterns: a model approach.

This study addresses a possible mechanism for fast disconjugate adaptation of binocular horizontal saccades. Disconjugacy of binocular saccades was elicited by two dichoptically presented, identical but aniseikonic, random checkerboard patterns. Adaptation was achieved with the patterns at far distance (144 cm). In this condition, which requires a relatively small (8%) size difference of the saccades, a short learning period was mandatory for the binocular saccades to become disconjugate. The saccadic modifications were superimposed on an idiosyncratic pattern of intra-saccadic yoking. A model of saccadic signal generation is described, that has been used to separate the contributions on saccadic disconjugacy provided by modification of visual inputs processing, which alters the motor-system inputs, and by modification of the control system: the adaptation. We identified three major components of the saccadic command (two phasic and one tonic) that contribute and in a specific way to the saccadic yoking and disconjugacy. The model analysis proposes that separate control mechanisms exist operating on these phasic and tonic signals. We show that the saccadic system can generate the vergence component shown by our aniseikonic saccades. We discuss a distributed-parallel implementation of the saccadic system able to provide both the conjugate and disconjugate components of control.

Hepatitis A virus anicteric encephalitis coexistent with hepatitis C virus infection.

A 34-yr-old male presented with acute encephalitis. The encephalitis was due to an anicteric hepatitis A virus infection superimposed upon coexistent hepatitis C virus infection. Neurologic syndromes due to hepatitis A virus infection have all been associated with jaundice. Neurologic complications of hepatitis C virus infections have not been described. Identification of hepatitis A virus as an etiology of viral encephalitis can reduce the need for extensive costly evaluations, and unnecessary empiric antibiotics. Further clinical experience will determine if hepatitis C virus produces neurologic manifestations.

Salivary ferning and the menstrual cycle in women.

The Authors report the data relative to the monitoring of menstrual cycle carried out by the observation of salivary ferning. They compared the usual physical and hormonal parameters of four groups of women with the aspect of the crystallisation of the saliva observed both by normal optical microscope and by a special type of pocket microscope which can be used by women themselves. In conclusion the Authors report a careful examination of the biochemical correlation relating the women's hormonal climate and its salivary constituents.

Objective and subjective data for fertile period diagnosis in women: comparison of methods.

The Authors have evaluated the reliability of various methods, both natural and biochemical, for the identification of the female ovulatory period in women with regular periods. They compared these methods among themselves and with echographical checking of ovulation. It emerged clearly from the study that the greatest reliability among the natural methods is obtained through the evaluation of the presence of cervical mucus, while among biochemical methods the best results are obtained by a semiquantitative colorimetric test. Brilliant prospects have also been opened by research on saliva.

The protean manifestations of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. A retrospective review of 26 cases from Korea.

Twenty-six cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome from 1981 to 1986 were retrospectively reviewed to determine the scope of clinical presentation and the unique complications of the illness. The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of Hantaan virus antibody in 25 cases and by characteristic autopsy findings in 1 case. The illness could be classified into three distinct clinical subgroups. Fever was universally present. Two patients presented with intractable shock and diffuse hemorrhage and died within 6 days from multi-organ system failure, mimicking the clinical picture of overwhelming sepsis. Eighteen patients presented with acute renal failure with an illness lasting a mean of 21 days (range, 10 to 36 days). Resolution of thrombocytopenia heralded recovery of renal function. At discharge, the serum creatinine level was normal in 13 patients; 5 patients had evidence of minimal renal dysfunction. Acute pulmonary edema requiring hemodialysis and retroperitoneal hemorrhage were the major complications in this subgroup. Six patients had an undifferentiated febrile illness with normal renal function. Fever, thrombocytopenia, abnormal urinalysis, hypertransaminasemia, and a benign clinical course characterized the third clinical pattern. The recent availability of serodiagnostic methods to detect Hantavirus group antibody facilitates the diagnosis of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Application of this test in the described clinical settings will identify unsuspected cases, broaden the knowledge of the geographic distribution of Hantavirus infection, and increase physician awareness of its protean manifestations.
