Relaxin in human decidua.

Relaxin (RLX) has been purified from the ovary of the pregnant pig and rat but not from human tissues. Our study shows that tissue extracts and incubation media of in vitro culture of human decidua contain a substance with relaxin bioactivities: the inhibition of spontaneous uterine contractions and the elongation of the interpubic ligament. After chromatography on Sephadex G-50 the bioactivity was retained in a protein fraction of approximately 6000 daltons mol wt. The yield of RLX from decidua was 15--33.5 GPU/g fresh tissue. This opens the possibility of the isolation and purification of RLX in the human species.

Some properties of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase from rat and chick brain: a comparative study.

1. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) has been purified to homogeneity from rat and chick brain by affinity chromatography with Sepharose bound 2',5' ADP. 2. Some properties of the two enzymes are studied and the effects of hydrogen ion concentration, Mg2+ ions, temperature and urea on the initial rate of enzyme are described. 3. G6PDH from chick brain differs from the rat enzyme in affinity for 2',5' ADP Sepharose, in pH optimum, in heat stability and it is differently affected by Mg2+ ions. No effect is detectable after urea treatment on enzymes from both sources.

Effect of prostaglandins in vivo on enzymes involved in thyroid carbohydrate metabolism.

Treatment of adult guinea pigs with prostaglandins produces changes in the levels of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism of the thyroid gland. A decrease in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity is observed with a concomitant increase in 6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase; the glycolytic enzymes appear unaffected by the same treatment. The results indicate that prostaglandins do not have the biochemical effects obtained with thyrotropin and cAMP administration, showing that these compounds play an antagonistic role in comparison with the above mentioned stimulating agents.

[Behavior of estrogen and progesterone receptors in intracranial meningioma].

Observation on value of estrogen and progesterone receptors in intracranial meningiomas. The authors take into consideration twenty intracranial meningiomas reperted in patients that differ for age, sex and histological pattern of the lesions, for value receptor content and their variability with mentioned variants. They report receptors contents of meningiomas and its variability with age and histological pattern.

Primary intracranial esthesioneuroblastoma. Case report.

Esthesioneuroblastoma or olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare tumor of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. In the majority of cases the cerebral involvement is secondary. Only ten cases have been reported in which the tumor was primarily intracranial. An eleventh case is reported and literature reviewed.

[Right temporo-occipital ganglioglioma in a 10-year-old patient].

Authors describe an operated case of ganglioglioma of the right temporo-occipital region in a ten year old patient. After case presentation and an analysis of the literature, the diagnostic pre-operative problems are discussed analysing the CT aspects of the lesion.
