A bacterial strain was isolated from a marine sediment highly contaminated by hydrocarbons. From taxonomic tests, it was identified as Pseudomonas nautica. This marine strain was able to grow on nitrate, nitrite and nitrous oxide as an electron acceptor. The terminal product from the denitrification was dinitrogen. Thus, P. nautica was a denitrifier. The kinetics of each step of denitrification was examined in resting cell suspensions. The relative rates of nitrate and nitrite reduction and of nitrite reduction and nitrous oxide production explain, respectively, the presence of accumulated nitrite and that of compound intermediate between nitrite and nitrous oxide.
Thirty-seven children (6-13 years old), receiving a flexible dosage of imipramine (IMI) for nocturnal enuresis, were evaluated. After a mean time of 8.5 +/- 7.0 weeks of therapy, 40.5% no longer wet the bed; 32.4% had a mean benefit of 80%; 27.01% had a negligible response. The best relationship observed was between clinical effect and drug serum concentrations rather than with drug daily dose, the most satisfactory being that with IMI seric values (P = 0.019). Responders (effect higher than 50%) had higher IMI serum concentrations (P less than 0.05) than poor responders. At 3 and 6 months after stopping the drug, over 90% of the responders maintained the maximum response reached during treatment. The side-effects observed were irritability, reduction of appetite, headache, a mild increase of blood pressure.

The auxotype/serovar (A/S) class of 489 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were determined and 425 isolates from 390 consecutive patients with gonorrhea who attended the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle during the first three months of 1985 were analyzed. Patients included 123 women, 187 heterosexual men, and 80 homosexual men. A total of 57 A/S classes of N. gonorrhoeae were identified during this study. For the first eight weeks, between three and seven new A/S classes were identified each week. The number of new A/S classes encountered in this community declined subsequently, and leveled off at about zero to two new A/S classes introduced per week. Two A/S classes were limited almost solely to homosexual men, one group of related classes was limited to heterosexual patients, and one class was initially limited largely to heterosexual men, possibly because of spread from a prostitute. The results show that the A/S classification system can be used in combination with epidemiologic data for tracing the introduction and spread of gonoccocal strains and their eventual elimination from a community. A/S classification can be used to study the clinical epidemiology of gonorrhea and may facilitate evaluation of strategies for control of gonorrhea.

Clinicult, a selective medium for culturing Neisseria gonorrhoeae, was field-tested in a gonorrhea screening program in Seattle, Wash., in 1973. The results with this medium and with the Transgrow and Thayer-Martin culture systems were compared as to sensitivity and specificity. A total of 5,141 women from three patient groups were included in the study. Group 1 consisted of 720 female patients of the venereal disease clinic of the Seattle-King County Health Department, who served as the control group. When this group was screened with the Clinicult and Thayer-Martin culture media, the Thayer-Martin medium proved superior in identifying positive carriers. Group 2 was composed of approximately 2,000 patients from five different facilities, including family planning clinics and hospital out patient services. No statistical difference in accuracy was found between the two culture systems used for this group-Clinicult and Transgrow. Group 3 was comprised of approximately 2,500 female patients who were screened with the Clinicult and Transgrow cultures by their own private physician or his staff. The Clinicult system proved significantly less effective than the Transgrow cultures in identifying infected females in group 3. The physicians varied greatly in their ability to use the Clinicult system successfully. Possible reasons for their errors may have been (a) lack of motivation and of care by their office personnel in conducting the necessary additional procedures required with Clinicult, (b) the inhibitory nature of the medium, and (c) the failure of the medium to produce colonies of adequate size. The staffs of communitywide screening programs for gonorrhea need to be highly selective in choosing the medical facilities in which to use the Clinicult culture system. When laboratory facilities are available for the full utilization of the Thayer-Martin medium, this system is preferable. When, however, standard culture procedures are not readily available, Clinicult, properly used, can reduce the central laboratory load by eliminating the need for processing negative cultures.
The aim of the study was to compare the morphology of craters produced on the dentinal surface by CO2 laser beams (LASERSAT CO2) before and after the removal of the carbonized layer, besides with different settings of the power and duration of the laser beam. Thirty-three recently extracted non carious young third molar teeth were sectioned from vestibular and lingual surfaces, exposing a planed dentinal surface. Twenty impacts were made on each of dentinal surface producing 20 individual craters. The duration and the power of each laser beam were different on each tooth. The duration varied from 0.1 to 0.4 second (0.1-0.2-0.3-0.4 s). The power varied from 1 to 5 watts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 w). Specimens obtained for a power of 3 and 4 watts and a duration of 0.1 and 0.2 second were examined with a JEOL 35CF (25 KV, magnification: x 30, x 110, x 200), before and after the removal of the carbonized layer. The carbonized layer of the craters was removed with an air polisher (HEATCO). Craters obtained for all duration values as well as for all power values were analyzed with a profilometer. The chosen profilometer was: TALISURF 10; horizontal amplification Vh = 20; vertical amplification Vv = 200. Samples were observed by a SEM and the craters depth and diameter were measured with a profilometer. Then, the carbonized layer of the craters was removed with an air polisher and the cleaned dentinal surface was observed again with the SEM and the profilometer.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
