Wilms' tumour propagated through the inferior vena cava into the right heart cavities.

A report is made of a rare case of Wilms' tumour which simulated clinically a syndrome of ;right heart failure', as found in some cases of Ebstein's disease. The clinical, radiological, and electrocardiographic study led to the suspicion of this type of malformation. The cine-angiographic study revealed two important facts: the impossibility of approaching the inferior vena cava with opaque material injected into the azygos vein and a filling defect of the right atrium. The post-mortem study revealed the presence of a Wilms' tumour of the right kidney which extended into the inferior vena cava and into the right atrium without producing metastases. This seems to be the first case of this peculiar course of a Wilm's tumour which has grown into the right atrium, resulting in this bizarre clinical picture.

Age-related changes in calcium homeostatic mechanisms in synaptosomes in relation with working memory deficiency.

Aging is associated with alterations in different systems that govern neuronal calcium homeostasis. This study was designed to determine whether any of these alterations may contribute to the decline in spatial working memory that is observed in old rats. Several parameters [initial (5 s) and steady state (15 min) 45Ca2+ uptake, FCCP-releaseable 45Ca2+, [Ca2+]i levels, depolarization-induced phosphoprotein (P97, PP65, P42) dephosphorylation and acetylcholine levels and release) involved in calcium homeostasis/signaling were determined in whole brain synaptosomes derived from adult (9-month-old) and old (24-month-old) rats that were evaluated for spatial memory performance in the eight-arm radial maze. The neurochemical analysis indicated that both the 9- and 24-month-old rats were impaired with respect to 3-month-old animals. When learners (animals reaching criterion; RC) were compared to memory impaired rats (MI), it was found that the FCCP-releaseable 45Ca2+ of synaptosomes, that reflects mitochondrial calcium, was lower in the MI than the RC rats and was correlated with the behavioral performance of the rats in their first testing sessions. The results suggest that the loss of calcium uptake capacity in synaptic mitochondria during aging may be associated with impaired working memory in old animals.

Sequential extraction for radionuclide fractionation in soil samples: a comparative study.

Two sequential extraction procedures, Tessier's method (Anal. Chem. 51(7) (1979) 844), and a current version known as Schultz's method (J. Environ. Radioact. 40(2) (1998) 155), were compared. The two procedures were applied to a natural soil sample that presents high activity concentrations in natural radionuclides of the 238U series. Reproducibility studies of each method and a comparison between the two sets of results were performed for uranium, thorium, and radium. The results were different for each radionuclide. Analysis of the extracted fractions was carried out by alpha spectrometry.

[Jejunal leiomyosarcoma. A case report].

Jejunal leiomyosarcoma, is an uncommon neoplasm. Diagnosis can be difficult because symptoms may be vague and nonspecific. We report the case of a 33-years-old patient, which was diagnosed and operated of this infrequent pathology.

Changes of calcium homeostasis in nerve endings during aging.

Calcium uptake reduction in synaptosomes observed in old rats is partly due to a decreased calcium influx through brain voltage-dependent calcium channels. This defect is not due to differences in the polarization of the plasma membrane, but rather to the influx of calcium itself, and may be accentuated at lower concentrations of calcium. We found that the cytosolic calcium concentration in 24-month-old rats is higher than in adults, both at rest and under K-depolarization, and it is suggested that these high calcium levels may partially inactivate synaptosomal calcium channels. The mitochondrial defect may be partially responsible for the increase in cytosolic calcium with age in K-depolarized synaptosomes, but other factors are probably responsible for the increase in resting (Ca2+).

[Bilateral Warthin tumors. Case report and review of literature].

Tumors of the salivary glands are fairly frequent among the tumors of the head and neck. Cystoadenolymphoma is a benign salivary tumor. A case of bilateral Warthin tumor was diagnosed eight years after the appearance of the first homolateral lesion. The diagnosis, literature review, and treatment are discussed.

[Kukuchi's disease of the neck: report of two cases].

Kikuchi's disease is an unusual disease, described in 1972, that is characterized by lymph node enlargement and fever. Cervical lymph nodes are affected so often that the ear, nose and throat specialist should be aware of this entity during differential diagnosis. Two cases treated in our service are reported and the literature is reviewed.
