Lymphoid cells in chicken intestinal epithelium.

The intraepithelial lymphoid cells of chicken small intestine were studied by light microscopy using 1 mu Epon sections, and by electron microscopy. Three cell types were found: small lymphocytes, large lymphoid cells, and granular cells. These cells correspond to the theliolymphocytes and globule leucocytes of previous authors. The numbers of all cell types increased with age. Correlation was found between the number of small lymphocytes and large lymphoid cells, but not between granular cells and either of the other two. A hypothesis is proposed, assigning these cells with a function in mucosal immunity.

Sudden death in mitral valve prolapse: associated accessory atrioventricular pathways.

Sudden death in patients with mitral valve prolapse is a rare complication with a possible arrhythmic mechanism. We made a detailed postmortem examination of the conduction system in three patients with MVP who died suddenly. One patient who died in cardiac failure had a normal conduction system. The two other patients with no cardiac symptoms prior to death had both accessory atrioventricular pathways. These findings suggest a higher incidence than hitherto known of accessory bypass tracts in patients with MVP who die suddenly, and support the presumption of an arrhythmic cause of death.

gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase as a possible marker of Sertoli cells in fish testes for studies of xenoestrogens.

Estrogenic chemicals are known to have marked effects on the reproductive system of male fish. Finding useful markers of reproductive effects are therefore of great importance and interest. gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP) is a possible marker of Sertoli cells in testes of fish. In the present study we have examined the relationship between the activity of gamma-GTP and the histological structure of the Sertoli cells in testes of five fish species (guppy, Poecilia reticulata; platyfish, Xiphophorus maculatus; eelpout, Zoarces viviparus; rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; flounder, Platichthys flesus). In general we found that the more distinct the Sertoli cells the higher the activity of gamma-GTP.

Concentration-dependent effects of nonylphenol on testis structure in adult platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus.

Nonylphenol has been found to exert estrogenic effects in fish and may affect the fertility of male fish. The objective of this study was to use the platyfish, Xiphophorus maculatus, as a model to evaluate the concentration-dependent effects of nonylphenol on the testicular structure. A tendency of a concentration-dependent decrease in the gonadosomatic index was observed after 28 days of treatment with nonylphenol. Histological examination revealed marked effects of nonylphenol on the testis structure. The effects were more pronounced at the higher concentrations of nonylphenol. This study strongly suggests that exposure to nonylphenol can result in decreased fertility in X. maculatus males.

[Congenital atrioventricular block--intrauterine diagnosis and neonatal pacemaker treatment].

A complete fetal heart block was diagnosed in 29 weeks gestation by means of 2-dimensional and M-mode echocardiograms and by analyzing the combined Doppler effect of atrial and ventricular movements. Because of increasing fetal ascites and edema, Digoxin treatment is given from 31 weeks gestation until birth. 30 hours postnatal the child develops congestive heart failure which disappeared completely after pacemaker treatment. We stress the importance of early diagnosis with possibility of prenatal treatment and optimal planning of delivery in cooperation between obstetrician and pediatric cardiologist.
