A case of neurological disease in a 11 year-old boy is described. The disease began early in life and had recently progressed to paraplegia with pyramidal tract dysfunction, generalized muscle atrophy and numerous fasciculations. The association of pyramidal tract and peripheral dysfunction led to the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, despite some unusual features. A review of literature data concerning the juvenile and infantile types of the disease is presented, emphasizing the heterogeneity of the disease.
The case reported concerns a 18 day-old girl who was hospitalized for severe toxemia. The nauseous smell, and significant ketonuria led us to suspect a disorder in amino-acids metabolism. Diagnosis was proven by gas chromatography. With adequate diet, evolution was favourable and the child had a normal psycho-motor development.

Thirteen children, aged 18 months to 14 years and presenting with sickle cell anemia and cardiomegaly (Cardiothoracic ratio greater than or equal to 0.55) were investigated by echocardiography and radio-isotopic measurement of the cardiac output. Eight children presented with one or several criteria of anemic cardiopathy: left ventricular dilatation and hyperkinesia, increased cardiac index. On the contrary, 2 children presented with left ventricular dilatation and decreased contractility, without increase in the cardiac index; 3 children presented with echocardiographic findings similar to those of controls and a normal cardiac index, which is unusual in cases with chronic anemia. These results show that the cardiovascular system of children with sickle cell anemia does not always behave as one would expect in chronic anemia. They also suggest the possible early occurrence of cardiomyopathy, as already described in adults with sickle cell anemia.
50 children with bone and joint infections (acute osteomyelitis, suppurative acute arthritis, osteoarthritis) were treated with pristinamycin. The responsible bacterium was most often but not exclusively Staphylococcus aureus; its sensitivity to various antibiotics is discussed. The value of biochemical tests for diagnosis and follow-up is emphasized; the potency of this drug avoids the need for intravenous therapy. A therapeutic protocol according to age, type of and sensitivity of the germs is proposed.
