[Plasma histamine and exercise-induced bronchospasm].

The pathogenesis of bronchospasm of effort is not yet elucidated and it is probable that is determined by multiple factors. In this study we have tested the role of mastocytes in taking as an index of their activation the fluctuation of plasma histamine levels during repeated exercise tests. We will show that asthmatic subjects who develop bronchospasm on effort have a significant rise (times 3) in their level of serum histamine whilst normal subjects don't show much change. Furthermore in a repeated effort test we have observed a strict parallelism between the occurrence of bronchospasm of effort and a rise in plasma histamine levels. These different observations enable us to consider that the activation of mastocytes and the liberation of mediators which follow play an important role in the pathogenesis of bronchospasm of effort.

Some remarks on the axial skeleton in Protopterus (Pisces, Dipnoi).

Based on a comparative morphological study of the axial skeleton in a broader range of "primitive bony fishes" a reevaluation of some characteristic traits of the vertebral column in the African lungfish has been done. The axial skeleton of living dipnoans has to be regarded as reduced from a more complex phylogenetic state and may be neotenic in some respect. The formation of perichordal bony autocentra could be confirmed, at least in one specimen. The well-known invasion of mesenchymal cells into the fibrous sheet of the notochord is interpreted as a rudimentary chordacentric "vertebralization". Also included is an analysis of the peculiar urostyle of lungfishes, its regeneration capacity and its bearing upon the principles of vertebra-formation.

[Visual evoked potentials and water deprivation of rats during intrahypothalamic application of substance P].

Visually evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded in the visual cortex, the dorsal geniculate nucleus and the lateral hypothalamus of satiated and water-deprived rats with and without additional drinking sounds to strengthen motivation and were compared with those during substance-P-injections. Differences in VEP and corresponding spatial and temporal interrelationships of these areas were found by using the method of coincidence of single VEP. Variations of drinking behaviour, weight loss and motor activity were recorded. The findings are discussed with regard to SP and its function as a "regulid peptide".

[Motivational dependence of changes in visual evoked potentials in rats during water deprivation].

Visually evoked potentials (VEPs) of the visual cortex, the dorsal geniculate nucleus and the lateral hypothalamus of satiated and water-deprived rats with and without additional drinking sounds to strengthen motivation were recorded. Differences in the motivational state led to changes in VEPs and altered interrelations in space and time between these brain areas, as estimated the method of coincidence analysis of single VEP.

Quality of life of inoperable non-small cell lung carcinoma. A randomized phase II clinical study comparing radiotherapy alone and combined radio-chemotherapy.

Eighty one patients with inoperable non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) were entered in a randomized phase II trial comparing split-dose irradiation alone to combined treatment radiotherapy and polychemotherapy (C.A.P. + V.D.S.). The quality of life and the survival of the patients were studied. We have defined three classes of quality of life responses based on the time elapsed before the performance status index drops. A higher quality of life failure rate was observed in the combined treatment group (p non-significant) but the time elapsed before the Karnofsky index drops is longer in the combined treatment group for the quality of life "no change" subgroup (p = 0.15). Survival and quality adjusted survival are similar in both treatment groups. The same conclusion holds for retrospective stratified treatment groups. The results of the study are presented according to the decision tree theory. We conclude that as far as the quality of life is concerned, polychemotherapy combined with the particular split-dose irradiation schedule used is an effective treatment of inoperable NSCLC. Its efficiency is comparable to, but not better than, the same radiotherapy schedule alone taken as a reference baseline.

Pulmonary regional ventilation. C15O2 single breath method. New technical improvements.

After a single inhalation of C15O2 labelled air, from residual volume to total lung capacity, followed by a few seconds apnea, it is possible to record in four or six lung zones the regional activity changes on a time basis. A first fast rise in activity is seen during the inhalation phase, corresponding to the ventilation in the region of interest (ROI). During the apnea, a slower decreasing component is observed in the different ROI, proportional to the regional blood flow, as almost instantaneously C15O2 is converted to labelled water. After the pioneer work of West & Dollery (1962) very few papers appeared on the subject despite technical improvements as, for instance, coincidence counting of radioactive events. We thus decided to improve the reproducibility and accuracy of the method which were of such a poor quality that no individual measurements were possible in the past. Were of critical importance: a careful positioning of the patients between the counters, a faster electronics improving true coincidence counting. In six healthy volunteers (age 22-35) the values obtained for regional ventilation with the C15O2 single breath were compared to the values given by the inhalation of a poorly soluble gas (Nitrogen13). The correlation between the two sets of measurements is high (r = 0.975). The slope of the regression line is 0.859, ordinate at origin is 2.35. This reveals a systematic error. A mathematical model was therefore developed to take into account the "washout" occurring during the constitution of the ventilation peak, and to correct its value.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
