UNIGEN - universal language of aviation.

In 1978, 12 million flights arose from nations where English is a foreign language. From these, crash-deaths averaged 200 per million flights. The Aerospace Linguistic Foundation is incorporated to further cooperative evolution of a suitable speech for universal air use as envisaged by I.C.A.O. The language is called UNIGEN, an acronym from Gensise 11:1. It reflects the paragmatic monitoring of collective air communications and universal linguistic developments. The foundation underwrites investigations by existing communication faculties of linguistic problems identified from accidents, etc. (e.g. Tenerife shows English phonemes "th" and "wh" are not internationally suitable). Optimum expressions may derive from the world languages. Phonetics may also be selected to monitor the human factor, e.g. plosives to spot hyperventilation or arousals for sleep. "As a man speaks, so is he." Future air communications must exploit hearing and sight concurrently to assure the million-to-one reliability required for perception transfer.

Calcific stenosis of a glutaraldehyde-treated porcine bioprosthesis in the aortic position.

The porcine xenograft bioprosthesis is used widely at the present time, although its long-term durability is still being evaluated. Calcification resulting in stenosis of the glutaraldehyde-treated bioprosthesis has been reported infrequently. In the patient described herein, severe calcific stenosis of a porcine xenograft in the aortic position occurred 45 months after implantation. This report emphasizes the life-threatening and rapidly progressive nature of this complication in the long-term survivor after valve replacement.

The expression of Ia antigenic determinants on macrophages required for the in vitro antibody response.

A subpopulation of antigen-presenting macrophages required for an in vitro antibody response to burro erythrocytes was deleted by pretreating the splenic macrophages with anti-Ia serum and complement (C). The in vitro response of the macrophage depleted T-B cell population could not be restored by the addition of macrophages resistant to anti-Ia antibodies and C (Ia-). The response of Ia- macrophages and the macrophage-depleted T-B cells was only reconstituted by the addition of Ia+ macrophages. Macrophages pretreated with anti-Ia antibodies restricted to react with determinants of one I subregion could not support the in vitro antibody response when added to cultures whose macrophages were pretreated with anti-Ia serum and C specific for the I-J subregion. These results confirmed that Ia determinants of the I-A, the I-E, and the I-C subregions were all expressed on the I-J+ macrophage required for an in vitro antibody response.
