Employee privacy: legal and research developments and implications for personnel administration.

The contemporary emphasis on privacy has created a myriad of complex personnel problems and associated approaches to handle them. These privacy-oriented problems generally involve social, ethical, legal, managerial, and even political considerations. Personnel administrators are constantly confronted with the privacy issue. This article attempts to synthesize privacy information relevant to personnel administration, and to provide personnel administrators with managerial guidance for handling employee privacy problems in the work environment. It places particular emphasis on differentiating between ethical and legal aspects of privacy in our society, and, accordingly, on clarifying existing confusion over the impact of so-called "privacy laws" on personnel administration.

Mathematical description and use in forecasting of the caries curve.

Caries curves drawn from empirical prevalences (DMFT counts) of US and Hungarian males as well as females, and British male-female combined samples were satisfactorily described by the transformed truncated Cauchy function: y = 1 + c [-1/2 + 1/pi arc tan (a x + b)]. The parameters a, b, and c, respectively, were determined by a computer with the least squares' method. Of these descriptive models, prevalences at specified ages (covered in the original reports) were read, and additionally the half-life values and maximum yearly relative increments of decay (with the age of their occurrence). The mean deviation of all individual readings in the five models from the observed prevalences was 3.6% only. In each sample, thereafter, relying upon empirical DMF counts in only five juvenile cohorts, analogous models, referred to as predictory, were constructed by the computer, and their extrapolated right tails were compared both with the empirical DMF counts and with the descriptive models. Slight deviations were experienced, the mean deviation of all readings from the empirical counts being 4.5%. Accordingly, predictions of future caries prevalence (in later adolescence in the US samples, and adulthood in all five ones) were feasible relying on DMFT counts. By the predictory models a trend to improving dental health was demonstrated in the American samples (based on the 1971-74 survey) whereas for the other three populations a further rise of caries prevalence was forecast in adults. Merits and limitations of such predictions as well as an improved new procedure used in the comparisons ("penalty points method"), taking into account clinical requirements, were discussed.

Synergistic effect of human relaxin and progesterone on human myometrial contractions.

In an in vitro human myometrial strip system, both relaxin and progesterone can independently decrease the amplitude of spontaneous myometrial contractions. However, progesterone and relaxin synergize in this action. Doses of relaxin and progesterone which independently are ineffective, together inhibit myometrial contraction amplitude. Relaxin and progesterone are both products of the corpus luteum, a structure necessary for early pregnancy maintenance. The synergistic action of relaxin and progesterone in vitro suggests a similar in vivo physiologic effect in establishing uterine quiescence.

Simulated cancer of the lower lip attributed to a "caliber persistent" artery.

Observations are reported on three lesions of the lower lip simulating cancer in elderly men and attributed to caliber persistent arteries. Persistent caliber arteries are those with a diameter larger than normal near a mucosal or external surface. Caliber persistency of the lip artery is best characterized by a quotient, using the distance from the border between epithelium and connective tissue as numerator, and its diameter as denominator. A quotient lower than 1.6 to 1.7 may be regarded as indicative of this vascular anomaly.

Non-malignant perineural spread of epithelial tissue in the orofacial region.

A 48 year-old male had two operations because of severe neuralgic pains in the region of the right infraorbital nerve. The first operative specimen consisted of connective tissue, striated muscle fibers and two myelinated nerve bundles, surrounded by a ring of well differentiated squamous epithelium. Initially the lesion was assumed to show perineural spread of cancer in this region. As the pain was not alleviated, a second operation was performed. The framework of the second specimen also consisted of connective tissue and muscle. It contained in addition an atheromalike cyst and some nerve bundles, ensheathed by well differentiated epithelial cells partly in a ring-, partly in a horseshoe-like pattern. The perineural epithelial sheaths could be traced to a rupture of the cyst, and to benign proliferation of its epithelial lining in the connective tissue and along the nerve bundles. Following the second operation the patient was relieved of his complaints. During the last five years he had repeated control examinations but no sign of malignant disease could be found; his state of health was perfect. Our finding of benign perineural spread of squamous epithelium has not been described previously. The nature of the so-called perineural lymph spaces is also discussed.
