High technology in geriatric care.

The use of technology in the care of the elderly can be very important in maintaining the quality of the lives of individuals with functional impairments. Advanced technology is not inherently costly, and its use in selected situations may be of less cost than current practices. Intelligent and compassionate use of these technologies will require our best efforts to allow the aged to share in the benefits such scientific advantages can bring.

The use of psychoactive drugs in elderly patients with psychiatric disorders: survey conducted in twelve Veterans Administration hospitals.

A survey conducted at 12 VA hospitals included the collection of detailed information on the use of psychoactive drugs in 1,276 elderly psychiatric patients. On the day of the survey, 61 per cent of the patients were receiving psychoactive drugs. Prescription practices relating to the choice of drugs, prevalence of drug use, dosage, combination drug preparations, and antiparkinson agents are discussed in terms of such factors as the patient's age and the diagnosis. Also discussed is the literature on psychoactive drugs, particularly as it pertains to elderly populations.

The role of technology in the long-term care for the aged.

High technology is often erroneously implicated as a principal cause of increased medical care costs. However, thoughtful application of high technology can reduce the cost and improve the quality of medical care, especially in long-term care of the aged. The Veterans Administration rigorously evaluates various forms of high technology before incorporating them into its medical care system.
