Macrophages isolated from periapical granuloma: a scanning electron microscopic study.

Macrophages isolated from human periapical granulomas were observed under the scanning electron microscope to analyze the surface architecture of the cell membrane. There were marked variations in form, degree of cell spreading, and surface morphology among macrophages of the same specimen. In addition, active phagocytosis of foreign particles or erythrocytes and close contact with other cells were observed. Our findings suggest that these events may represent different states of macrophage activation and provide the basis for further studies on the role of macrophages in host defense mechanisms.

Tissue response to a glass ionomer used as an endodontic cement. A preliminary study in dogs.

A glass ionomer and a standard zinc phosphate were compared with respect to their biocompatibility as endodontic cements. The tissue response was assessed by implantation of both materials in dog tibias. In general, the glass ionomer appeared to provoke a slightly lesser inflammatory response than the zinc phosphate, but this was significant only at the 10- and 30-day observations. At the end of 90 days the tissue response to the tested materials appeared to be similar and the inflammatory picture tended to be resolved with progressive new bone formation. These findings suggest that the tested glass ionomer might adequately replace the zinc phosphate cement as a luting material for endodontic implant stabilizers.

Evaluation of the apical seal obtained with endodontic implant stabilizers and different cementing materials.

Preliminary research was conducted to evaluate in vitro the apical seal obtained with endodontic implant stabilizers in conjunction with four different cement sealers. Standard laterally condensed gutta-percha cones and sealer were used as a control. Apical leakage was measured with the use of methylene blue dye solution. Gross leakage patterns resulted from endodontic implants cemented with both zinc phosphate and polycarboxylate. However, leakage appeared notably reduced when the implants were cemented with cyanoacrylate and Kerr Tubli-Seal. Statistical analysis showed that the lateral condensation of gutta-percha cones and sealer yielded the largest proportion of favorable results. Even so, none of the techniques employed was totally effective for obtaining a hermetic sealing of the root canal.

Chemical Phenomena↗

Adaptation of threaded dowels to dentin.

Adaptation of threaded dowels to the walls of the canals is minimal in the cervical third and maximal in the apical third. Each of the three types of dowels may cause lateral stresses and possibly fracture. Matched reamers and dowels reduce the danger of fracture. Smaller-diameter dowels maintain less contact with the dentin and avoid weakening the root. The Kurer Anchor system provided a satisfactory combination of nonlateral residual stresses which protected the root from complications.
