Influences of intraperitoneally and dietary administered vitamin E and selenium on the lipid composition in reproductive organs of male animals.

The aim of this work was to determine the protective effect of intraperitoneally and dietary administered vitamin E and selenium (Se) on the total lipid, cholesterol, and fatty acid composition in rat and lamb testes. The level of total lipid in rat testes was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) in the combination group as compared to the control group but slightly decreased in lamb testes (p < 0.05). In addition, the level of total lipid in lamb testes was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) by the Se alone. The content of total cholesterol in rats was higher in the Se group and its level in lamb testes was higher in the vitamin E groups than in the control group (p < 0.001). In rats testes, the amounts of palmitic, oleic, arachidonic acids, the total fatty acid, total unsaturated and total omega 6 acids were higher (p < 0.001) in the Se group. The proportions of palmitic and arachidonic acids were reduced in the vitamin E group and linoleic acid, total unsaturated, and total omega 6 fatty acids were high (p < 0.05) in the vitamin E and combination groups. In lamb testis tissues, the amounts of palmitic, arachidonic, total unsaturated and total omega 6 fatty acids were decreased in the vitamin E group in comparison to the control (p < 0.05). However, the amounts of arachidonic and total omega 6 fatty acids increased (p < 0.05) in the Se group. The proportions of arachidonic acid, total unsaturated fatty acid and total omega 6 fatty acids were high (p < 0.05) in the Se and combination groups. We concluded that the level of total lipid in testis tissues was reduced by dietary and intraperitoneally administered vitamin E and Se together. In contrast, it seems that the proportions of unsaturated and essential fatty acids in examined tissues are increased by vitamin E and Se.

Effects of nicotine on active avoidance learning in rats: sex differences.

Nicotine, a cognition enhancer and a drug of abuse, exerts its central actions through neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors which show sexual dimorphism. This study tested the effects of nicotine on active avoidance learning in male and female rats. Three month-old Sprague-Dawley rats received varying doses of nicotine (0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 mg/kg) or saline s.c. before active avoidance learning trials (15 trials/day) for a period of 5 days. Behavioural testing was continued after the termination of nicotine treatment once a week for four weeks. Nicotine improved acquisition of active avoidance learning in a dose-dependent manner. In male rats nicotine was active at all doses tested whereas, in females, learning performance deteriorated at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg. In conclusion, nicotine pre-treatment affects active avoidance in a sexually dimorphic and dose-dependent manner.

The relationship between clinical attachment loss and the duration of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in children and adolescents.

The periodontal status of 77 diabetic children and adolescents, and 77 paired, systemically-healthy, sex- and age-matched control subjects, was clinical examined. Fasting blood glucose, fructosamine and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1) values were determined. The mean periodontal pocket depths, clinical attachment levels and the parameters to assess diabetes mellitus from the diabetic group were significantly higher than those of the controls. We found a positive correlation between the duration of diabetes and clinical attachment loss, but not with periodontal probing depth, plaque index and gingival index in the diabetic group. A positive correlation was also assessed between the present serum fructosamine and gingival index in the diabetic group, but not in controls.

Human papillomavirus in a patient with severe gingival overgrowth associated with cyclosporine therapy. A case report.

Cyclosporin a is an endecapeptide that has been used clinically since 1978 as an immunosuppressant agent. Although cyclosporine appears to be uniformly beneficial in the treatment of a wide variety of disorders, its use may result in a number of side effects. One of the most important adverse effects is gingival overgrowth. This report relates a case of severe gingival overgrowth in a 31-year-old female who had received cyclosporine therapy in conjunction with a kidney transplant. Because of the severe gingival overgrowth, we analyzed a biopsy, which was positive for human papillomavirus. The case was treated and followed for 18 months.

The effect of irrigation with chlorhexidine or saline on plaque vitality.

24 adult patients suffering from Adult periodontitis were assigned to 4 groups: the 1st rinsed for 1 min with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX); the 2nd group were irrigated for 15 s with 0.2% CHX in a pulsed oral irrigator; the 3rd group rinsed for 1 min with saline and the 4th group were irrigated for 15 s with saline. Plaque vitality was measured after the 4 experimental procedures, using the method described by Netuschil et al. and scored using the method described by Rundegren et al. The results showed that a single rinse or irrigation with 0.2% CHX solution decreased the % of viable micro-organisms, but the vitality of the bacteria remained unchanged in saline groups. Statistical analysis indicated that irrigation with CHX was more effective at reducing plaque vitality than rinsing with CHX.

Intraglandular toxoplasmosis lymphadenitis of the parotid gland.

Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan infection manifested by systemic findings as well as generalized or localized lymphadenopathy. Although lympadenitis is the most common clinical form, involvement of the intraglandular nodes within the parotid gland found is a rare occurrence during the course of the disease. This unusual form may mimic a parotid mass, and can cause difficulties in differential diagnosis. In this article, a case of intraglandular parotid lymphadenitis which developed due to toxoplasmosis is presented, and the relevant literature is reviewed.

[Effect of Begg technique therapy in cases with excess overbite].

In this study, the effect of Begg technique therapy was investigated in cases with excess overbite. The sample consisted of 20 cephalometric films of 10 individuals who passed their active growth period. 20 parameters were measured on every lateral cephalometric film. Differences according to treatment were compared by paired t-test. As a result, the elimination of overbite seemed to be related to dentoalveolar factors.

Technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime lung scintigraphy findings in low-dose amiodarone therapy.

Amiodarone (AD)-induced pulmonary toxicity is one of the major complications of long-term AD therapy. Technetium-99m-labeled D: ,L: -hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (Tc-99m HMPAO) scintigraphy has been used to assess lung injury. We designed this study to clarify lung uptake changes of Tc-99m HMPAO using low doses of AD (5 mg/kg/day) during long-term therapy in a rabbit model. Group 1 consisted of 7 rabbits fed with AD by gavage for 6 months. To investigate the effect of ketamine on Tc-99m HMPAO uptake, 5 rabbits were included in Group 2 as a control group. Tc-99m HMPAO scintigraphy was performed in both Group 1 and Group 2 at baseline and after 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks of AD intake. After 16, 20, and 24 weeks of drug intake, Tc-99m HMPAO scintigraphy was repeated only in group 1. One-min anterior images were acquired 30 min after the injection of 37 MBq of Tc-99m HMPAO. For semiquantitative evaluation, the mean count values were obtained and lung/background and liver/background ratios were calculated. Histopathologic evaluation was performed. No increase in lung and liver uptake of Tc-99m HMPAO was found 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks after drug intake. There was no significant increase in L/B and H/B ratios of Tc-99m HMPAO in Group 1 compared with Group 2. Both scintigraphic studies and histopathologic examinations showed nonspecific changes. Longitudinal studies investigating Tc-99m HMPAO lung uptake may be planned in patients carrying risk factors for AD-induced lung toxicity.

Sexually dimorphic cognitive style, female sex hormones, and cortical nitric oxide.

Recent studies using the water maze (WM) found marked sex differences in behavioral strategy employed in place learning tasks in adult rats. When a change in the platform position is introduced following learning the place of a platform (visible or hidden) in a different position, female rats escape to the newly positioned visible platform faster than males. Nitric oxide (NO) is implicated in place learning, and there are regional sex differences in its stable metabolites, NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-), in rat brain. Furthermore, NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-) levels are sensitive to ovariectomy in female rats. The effect of sex hormones on brain development and function is well documented. The present study was undertaken to study the effects of ovariectomy and hormonal manipulations on cognitive performance in a WM task designed to test differences in behavioral strategy in Sprague-Dawley rats (n=48) of both sexes. Some of the females rats were ovariectomised and received either hormone replacement (estrogen or progesterone alone or in combination) or the vehicle. Cortical and hippocampal NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-) levels were determined after behavioral testing. There were no group differences in cognitive ability or non-cognitive factors such as motivation or swim speed. Males and intact females differed in their cognitive style, but hormonal manipulations in female rats did not affect this relative use of behavioral strategy. There was a correlation between performance on the trial where sex differences were most prominent and NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-) levels in the cortex. Our results suggest that the activational effects of circulating gonadal hormones do not play a major role in sexually dimorphic cognitive styles.

Postpubertal testicular/epididymal epithelial thickness alterations in unilateral epididymal/vasal obstruction of prepubertal rats.

This study was conducted to evaluate postpubertal testicular and epididymal epithelial changes induced by unilateral epididymal and vasal obstruction in rats by measuring epithelium thickness of seminiferous tubuli (MSTet) and epithelium thickness of ductus epididymis (MDEet). Rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: group I underwent unilateral epididymal ligation; group II underwent unilateral vasal ligation and group III received sham operations. MDEet on the ipsilateral side of the epididymal ligation group significantly decreased compared to the contralateral side and sham group. For the contralateral side of the ligated vas, MDEet significantly decreased compared to the ipsilateral side and sham group. MSTet was less on the side of the operation than the contra lateral side and the sham group after both surgical procedures. The obstruction point of the male genital tract affect sperm parameters for clinical extraction or aspiration procedures.

A hydatid cyst of the thyroid gland.

Echinococcosis, although eradicated in many countries, is still widespread in communities in which agriculture is dominant, and cystic hydatidosis is a significant public health problem in regions where echinococcosis is endemic. Hydatid cysts may be found in almost any part of the body, but most often in the liver and lungs. Other organs affected occasionally include the brain, muscle, kidney, bone, heart and pancreas. This report documents a rare case with a cystic nodule in the thyroid detected by ultrasonography. The patient was a 40-year-old woman with an euthyroid multinodular goitre. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic nodule, and the ultrasonic appearance of the cyst liquid showed multiple echoes, suggesting that the nodule could be a hydatid cyst. Bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. Postoperative examination of the nodule showed it to be a solitary primary thyroid hydatid cyst.
