Origins of Argentinean dentistry and development of teaching.

The history of the legal practice of dentistry in the Rio de la Plata region is given. The first diplomas were given in 1891 by the Medical Tribunal, before the creation of the dental school in Buenos Aires. The inauguration of teaching courses and the different teaching plans, as well as the biography of the teachers who initiated the teaching in Argentina are presented as are the creation of the School of Dentistry and the appearance of the three schools of the College of Medical Sciences in the monumental new building. Portraits of the teachers Etcheparborda, Pereira, Erausquin and Guardo, crafters of the old school are presented, together with those of the administrators of the university complex and the College, Profs. Dr. Jose Arce and Ricardo C. Guardo.

[150th Anniversary of general anaesthesia, applied in dental extraction].

Pain and idiomatic expressions referred to this subjet by all-time great figures are here related. The author also describes procedures to fight the pain off which had been used since antiquity; the disputable circumstances that originated opposite opinions about the primacy in applied anaesthesia. And these are the writings of Dr. Menczer vindicating Horacio Wells as the pioneer in discovering and using anaesthesia for surgical treatments.

[Eighty years of Catedra de Protesis].

Professor Antonio J. Guardo, important figur of the School of Dentistry of Buenos Aires, was the first professor who achieved in this school such a hierarchy being a dentist; for at that time it was demande for the Professorship the title of physician. The alternatives of this designation as professor are here described and at the same time some of the circumstances of his brillant teaching carreer, with references to his beginings and the family he formed.

[Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry].

Apollonia's short trajectory and her martyrdom in the times of Emperor Decius in the 3rd century, is here reported. The artists who painted the saint are quoted, offering a small biography about their trajectory and principals works. Bernardino Luini, painting is studied with more detail, mentioning the similar characteristics of his Saint Apollonia with those of some of the personages painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
