[The use micro-polarization in spinal cord lesions].

Transdermal micropolarization of the spinal cord was made in patients with consequences of the spinal cord injury or tuberculous spondylitis. Changes in clinical and electrophysiologic status were evaluated. It was found that local direct current through dermal electrodes promotes an improvement of both motor and autonomic functions in such patients. This corresponded to a positive dynamics both of the spinal cord state and cardiac activity. Possible mechanisms of influence of the direct current on the spinal cord as well as perspectives of application of micropolarization in spinal cord's damage are outlined.

Electric Stimulation

[A cross-correlational analysis of the bioelectrical activity of muscle antagonists in studying human voluntary motor activity in certain forms of motor disorders].

In healthy [correction of beglth] subjects, patients with children's cerebral palsy and spinal cord disturbances, the cross-correlation function of the EMG at the initial phase of voluntary movement and at the phase of static voluntary tension revealed some mechanisms maintaining coordinated interrelations among antagonist muscles at different phases. A new approach is suggested for estimation of the electromyogram and for a finer diagnosis of the CNS lesions at different levels.

[The use of the transcranial micropolarization method for decreasing the manifestations of hyperkinesis in patients with infantile cerebral palsy].

Transcranial micropolarization was used in the treatment of children with hyperkinetic form of infantile cerebral paralysis. The method was found to be more effective than various stereotaxic interventions on the brain or routine physiotherapy. Transcranial micropolarization exposure resulted in alleviation of hyperkinesis, posture-tonic reflexes, in improvement of active movements of the joints, supporting system, etc. Clinical status of patients exposed to this treatment modality improved by six times as against those treated traditionally. Clinical data and data of stimulation electromyography permit us to suggest a possible effect of transcranial micropolarization on the function of cerebral subcortical structures in patients with hyperkinetic form of infantile cerebral paralysis.

[Changes in the excitability of the spinal motor neurons during sessions of functional biocontrol in patients with different forms of infantile cerebral palsy].

Excitability changes at the segmentary level of the spine were examined during functional bioregulation sessions administered to patients with various forms of infantile cerebral paralysis (spastic diplegia, spastic hemiparesis) by recording N- and M-responses of musculus soleus and musculus gastrocnemius medial head. Neurophysiologic disorders were revealed at the spinal level depending on the disease form. The authors suppose that presynaptic inhibition is to a greater measure impaired in spastic hemiparesis, whereas spastic diplegia is associated with more extensive involvement even of spinal inhibitory mechanisms proper. Sessions of functional bioregulation resulted in clinical improvement and in development of a trend to normalization of spinal reflectory excitability. Such changes were recorded in musculus soleus of children with spastic diplegia and in gastrocnemius muscle median head of those with spastic hemiparesis. Possible effects of directed afferent currents on structure and function of supraspinal systems regulating spinal mechanisms activity are discussed.

[EEG in patients with infantile cerebral palsy before and after the treatment by the method of functional biofeedback].

The paper is concerned with a study into the mechanisms of central restructures in formation of a new motor stereotype using functional biomonitoring (FBM) after different pharmacological exposures. There were 117 patients aged 5 to 14 years with spastic forms of infantile cerebral paralysis. Biomonitoring sessions were carried out with the aid of portable indicators. Pharmacological correction was performed by midocalm or galanthamine or by combining the latter one with ganglerone++. The treatment course consisted of 15 training sessions. To study the EEG structure, use was made of the method of computing conditional probabilities of one wave of the EEG, provided it was preceded by any other one. Analysis of the dynamics of the biorhythmical structure of the EEG revealed the common mechanism of restructuring the central components of movements regulation for all the patients' groups using FBM. That mechanism lay in a highly significant increase of interrelated correlations of the main components of the EEG to the alpha-component together with formation or gain of the "alpha-nucleus". The patients' group who underwent biomonitoring sessions after galanthamine and gangleron administration manifested, as compared to the other groups, a highly significant transformation of teta- and delta-components to the alpha-frequency range and enhancement of interrelation of teta-components in the "working" hemisphere. This was coupled with the most beneficial data on the patients' status.

[Detection of movement disorders in newborn infants by using infants' blood serum in experimental models].

A method of early diagnosis of motor disorders of the central genesis in neonates within the first to the third days of life was elaborated in experimental models for estimating the status of the motor apparatus. The experiments were made on spinal (Th3-Th5) albino noninbred rats used as recipients, in which spontaneous and electric stimulation-induced EMG activity of the antagonists muscles of the hind limbs was recorded before and after intralumbar administration of donors' blood serum. The presence of motor pathology in a donor child is judged from the changes in the EMG parameters after administration of blood serum. The method enables revealing motor disorders in neonates even in cases where the clinical examination does not provide any conclusive answer.

[The effect of controlled afferentation on functional asymmetry in supraspinal disorders in children].

A reliable decrease of excitability of the motoneurons controlling the activity of right m. gastrocnemius as compared with the left one, was found in healthy children, where as there was no such difference in children suffering from cerebral paralysis. However, the difference did appear after several sessions of the muscle training with the aid of functional biocontrol technique. Possible mechanisms of the inter-hemisphere asymmetry effect in ontogenesis upon the spinal activity in norm, inherent motor pathology and in the course of the latter's correction, are discussed.

Afferent Pathways

[The compensatory plasticity of the brain when it is damaged].

A new test for determination of the degree of the compensatory processes after brain damage was proposed in experiments in the cats with one-sided transection of the hemisphere and children with one-sided cerebral palsy. The process of habituation of the skin galvanic reaction was used for this aim.

Adaptation, Physiological

[The development of the problem of memory transfer at the I. P. Pavlov Physiology Department].

Experimental findings have shown the significance of the investigation into the problem of memory transfer for the elucidation of mechanisms of conditioning. The existence of a chemical component of these mechanisms was revealed: chemical factors of peptide nature seem to play an important role in the pathogenesis and compensation of neurological disorders following brain lesions, including those occurring during the embryonic period. A new approach to the diagnosis, prognostication and treatment of a number of chronic brain diseases, is suggested. Pathogenetic principles of treatment of some of them are proposed. Some theoretical concepts generalizing experimental findings and clinical observations, are formulated.

[Correction of posture disorders and scoliosis in schoolchildren using functional biofeedback].

A novel technique is offered for correction of postural defects and early manifestations of scoliosis in schoolchildren using methods of functional biofeedback training. The technique allowed the patient to use the biofeedback signals informing on the degree of asymmetry in bioelectric activity of paravertebral muscles in static active straightening of the vertebral column. The data revealed a steady decrease in asymmetric activity indices in muscles erecting the column. This provided a physiological basis for a high clinical efficiency of the technique.

[Results of the ambulatory treatment of movement disorders in severe forms of cerebral palsy in childhood by the method of functional biological control].

The article is devoted to the use of functional biocontrol (FBC) with an external feedback in severe forms of childhood cerebral paralysis. The treatment was aimed at normalization of impaired reciprocal relations between antagonist muscles. The authors present practical recommendations on how to perform therapeutical sessions and propose a system for evaluating the efficacy of treatment with the use of FBC.

[Afferent determination of transfer factor formation in the rat spinal cord].

The mechanisms causing the appearance of transfer factor (TF) in the cerebrospinal tissue of rats were studied. Intracerebral TF injections to intact recipients were found to change asymmetrically the reflectory muscular responses. TF could be found in the extract of the rat spinal cord in rats with cut off n. tibialis sin. or with alcohol-novocaine blockade of posterior left tibial muscles, i.e., the reaction of the cerebral cells to the break in axon integrity is not responsible for TF formation. The appearance of TF in the cerebrospinal tissue less than two hours after alcohol-novocaine muscular blockade does not suggest that the axon integrity is the cause initiating TF formation. It is assumed that the deafferentation determines TF appearance in the cerebrospinal tissue.

Afferent Pathways

[Electrical activity of the brain of children with cerebral palsy and the formation of motor skills using methods of functional bioregulation].

The authors consider the results of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the bioelectrical brain activity in 175 children aged 5 to 14 years with motor disturbances due to various causes who received a rehabilitative treatment in a specialized child sanatorium. In addition to the traditional methods the authors employed some functional bioregulation techniques. A clinico-physiological analysis was conducted with the help of original evaluation scales. The use of the proposed method for the assessment of clinical efficacy and the employment of mathematical processing of EEG showed a high efficiency of techniques of the purposeful correction of motor disorders and contributed to a better understanding of the mechanisms of readjustments occurring in the CNS in the process of the formation of new motor skills. It was found that alpha-rhythm played the main role in the development of new motor skills.
