Infection of a Spodoptera frugiperda cell line with Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus.

The interactions of Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) with Spodoptera frugiperda cells (Sf9) were investigated. S. frugiperda cells are usually considered nonpermissive for BmNPV. However, in the present study, BmNPV DNA replication was observed and an increasing infectious titre, reaching 10(4) TCID50/ml on B. mori permissive cells by 6 days post-transfection, developed in the supernatant of infected Sf9 cells. Infection of Sf9 cells by BmNPV did not induce a discernible shutoff of cellular protein synthesis and no overt cytopathic effects were observed. These data indicate that the low permissivity of Sf9 cells for BmNPV replication is associated with an inapparent infection.

[Psychological measurement from Binet to Thurstone, (1900-1930)].

The French psychologist Alfred Binet is at the origin of the development of the mental test intended for diagnosing the intellectual level of children. Initially conceived as clinical tests their importation to the United States during the 1910's has considerably altered their use, significance and interpretation. Turned into political tools by eugenicists and hereditarists and used in large-scale selection operations, the tests have changed the psychologists' conception of intelligence: initially conceived as multifacted and qualitative, intelligence had become a single quantifiable entity. Within this context, the American psychologist Louis Leon Thurstone criticized the lack of exactness of the statistical tools used in the intelligence scale. Once objectivized, his method became a general law intended to account for all mental processes.

Does religious observance promote health? mortality in secular vs religious kibbutzim in Israel.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the association of Jewish religious observance with mortality by comparing religious and secular kibbutzim. These collectives are highly similar in social structure and economic function and are cohesive and supportive communities. METHODS: In a 16-year (1970 through 1985) historical prospective study of mortality in 11 religious and 11 matched secular kibbutzim in Israel, 268 deaths occurred among 3900 men and women 35 years of age and older during 41347 person-years of observation. RESULTS: Mortality was considerably higher in secular kibbutzim. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to adjust for age and the matched design; rate ratios were 1.67 (95% confidence interval [CI]=1.17, 2.39) for men, 2.67 (95% CI=1.55, 4.60) for women, and 1.93 (95% CI=1.44, 2.59) overall. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of birth cohorts confirmed the association. The lower mortality in religious kibbutzim was consistent for all major causes of death. CONCLUSIONS: Belonging to a religious collective was associated with a strong protective effect not attributable to confounding by sociodemographic factors. Elucidation of mechanisms mediating this effect may provide etiologic insights and leads for intervention.

[Experimental infection of Glossina morsitans morsitans (Mall) with Trypanosoma congolense (ZRE/G143/90). Parasite cycle and vector competence in the tsetse fly].

This report presents an experimental study of the life cycle of Trypanosoma congolense (ZRE/G 143/90) in relation to the vectorial competence of Glossina morsitans (Mall). The rate of engorgement at the time of an infectious meal and the mortality before day 15 of the life cycle were not significantly different between male and female flies. The mesocyclic forms of trypanosomes were regularly observed in the proventriculus, crop duct, oesophagus, cibarium and proboscis, except in the crop. On day 12 of the cycle, epimastigote forms were predominant in the proboscis. On day 13 of metacyclogenesis, four out of six rats (67%) used for feeding the flies were positive for trypanosomes upon buffy coat examination. These results demonstrate the short incubation period of trypanosomes in the vertebrate host and precociousness of the vectorial competence of some individuals of G m morsitans (Mall). Among the three cyclic stages, only the procyclic forms in the intestine showed a significant difference between the sexes, the male flies being more infected than the females. Metacyclogenesis undergoes three cleavages leading to the successive and permanent establishment of the procyclic, mesocyclic and metacyclic forms in the midgut, proventriculus and proboscis respectively.

[Sub-urethral diverticulum in women. Apropos of 6 cases].

Six female patients with a mean age of 40 years presenting with a suburethral diverticulum were treated between August 1990 and October 1992. The commonest functional symptoms were recurrent urinary tract infections (2/3 of cases) and post-voiding urethral discharge (1/2 of cases). Clinical examination revealed a tender anterior vaginal mass in only one half of cases. Only retrograde and voiding cystourethrography and transvaginal ultrasonography always demonstrated a direct or indirect image of the diverticulum. The suburethral diverticulum was resected via a transvaginal approach in the ventral supine position after sterilisation of the urine by prolonged antibiotic therapy. Urine drainage was generally ensured by a suprapubic catheter allowing antegrade cystography on the 15th day, prior to clamping then removal of the catheter. All but one of the patients immediately regained satisfactory micturition without dysuria or stress incontinence. Restoration of micturition was delayed in one patient with feelings of incomplete bladder emptying, but she urinated normally at three months. Postoperative imaging (retrograde and voiding cystourethrography, transvaginal ultrasonography) demonstrated resolution of the diverticulum in 5 cases. One patient had persistent signs of a small, residual diverticulum on antegrade cystography on the 15th day. Suburethral diverticulum is a rare disease of middle-aged women for which transvaginal surgical excision in the ventral supine position gives very good results.

Results of bilio-digestive derivative surgical procedures for benign lesions.

Short and long term results of 52 derivative-surgical procedures (43 choledocho-duodenal and 9 hepatico-jejunal with 45 latero-lateral and 7 termino-lateral approaches) were examined. The procedures were performed on patients with benign bilio-digestive conditions: 46 cases of lithiasis, 2 of which were sump syndromes after latero-lateral derivations, and 6 cases of chronic pancreatitis. Several patients were in poor pre-operative condition, which may have influenced postoperative mortality rates (6%). Morbidity was 15 per cent. Four patients (8%) without anastomotic stenosis had infections of the hepatobiliary system within four years of choledochoduodenostomy. In some cases of benign bilio-digestive lesions, derivative surgery is the procedure of choice, being preferable to endoscopic sphincterotomy. In derivative surgery, a termino-lateral approach has better results than a latero-lateral approach. Furthermore, due to the risk of stasis following a choledochoduodenostomy, a hepaticojejunostomy may be preferable.

Automatic control during hand reaching at undetected two-dimensional target displacements.

1. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that goal-directed pointing movements, executed at normal speed to a small visual target, but without vision of the movement, do not rely on preprogrammed commands (open-loop process); by contrast these responses are under the control of a feedback loop, which compares the ongoing response and the goal (or its internal representation). When the location of this goal is changed at the onset of the movement, an automatic correction of the path occurs. Modification of the goal was obtained by presenting a target in the peripheral visual field that the subject had to look at and point at as quickly and accurately as possible. When the orienting ocular saccade reached its peak velocity, statistically corresponding to the hand movement onset, the target was suddenly shifted 10 degrees in a random direction. This perturbation was undetected by the subject because of the absence of perception during the saccade. For the compensation to occur, the initial orientation of the movement and also its extent had to be modified. The results revealed 1) a nearly complete compensation of the movement path and a 66- to 80-ms duration lengthening; 2) relatively short reaction times to the perturbations (from 145 to 174 ms, with effective reaction times even 40 ms shorter); 3) nearly identical spatiotemporal movement characteristics to the perturbations, regardless of whether vision of the hand was allowed, suggesting that corrections were subserved by the same mechanisms. 2. The spatiotemporal characteristics of these unconscious corrections were similar to those observed in the classical double-step experiments investigating the intentional modifications of ongoing movements and suggest that they might share some common low-level mechanisms. That is, they could rely on visuokinesthetic feedback loops, which compare the updated information provided by the eye at the end of the saccade and the proprioceptive information of the end point effector (the fingertip here); they could also rely on feed-forward processes detecting the discrepancy between an efference copy of the movement and the new goal; or they could rely on a combination of those two main processes.

Pancreatic pseudocyst: successful treatment by percutaneous external catheter drainage.

A pseudocyst of the pancreas in a 6-year-old girl persisted for 2 months despite bowel rest and nutritional support. Following percutaneous introduction of a catheter into the cyst under ultrasound guidance and external catheter drainage for 11 days, the pseudocyst resolved completely and permanently. Nonoperative percutaneous techniques for drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts in children may be an effective alternative to surgical intervention.
