Incidence of cancer among welders of mild steel and other shipyard workers.

The incidence of cancer among 4571 shipyard workers with first employment between 1940 and 1979, including 623 welders of mild steel, was investigated in a historical cohort study. The loss to follow up was 1.1%. The total number of deaths was 1078 (974.5 expected) and there were 408 cases of cancer v 361.3 expected. Sixty five cases of lung cancer were found v 46.3 expected based on the national rates for males. Four pleural mesotheliomas had occurred (1.2 expected), none among the welders. An excess of lung cancers was found among the welders (nine cases v 3.6 expected). There were six cases of lung cancer v 1.6 expected in a high exposure group of 255 welders. A survey of the smoking habits as of 1984 indicated 10%-20% more daily smokers among the shipyard production workers than among Norwegian males. Exposure to smoking and asbestos were confounding variables in this study.

Pharmacokinetic profile of indoprofen in elderly subjects.

Multiple dosing four times daily for 7 days of indoprofen 200 mg, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with a short half-life (t1/2), revealed drug accumulation in eight elderly subjects. This indicates a substantially longer t1/2 (11 h) than that reported in young persons (3 h). A reduction in dose compared to younger subjects is recommended in elderly patients with osteoarthritis.

Progesterone, prostaglandin F-2 alpha, PMSG and oestrone sulphate during early pregnancy in the mare.

Blood samples from 4 mares during the late luteal phase, oestrus, early pregnancy and up to about 150 days of gestation were analysed for 15-keto-13,14-dihydroprostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGFM), progesterone, PMSG and oestrone sulphate by radioimmunoassays. During the late luteal phase, at the time of corpus luteum regression and decreasing progesterone levels, PGFM peaks were recorded. During early pregnancy (i.e. from mating and up to about Day 30) no such peaks were detected. After mating the progesterone levels increased and remained high throughout the observation period. During the oestrous cycle PMSG levels tended to reflect gonadotrophic activity because of high cross-reaction with horse LH and horse FSH. During early pregnancy PMSG levels increased at around Day 40, reaching maximum values between Days 50 and 80, when the blood concentration was 1000 times higher than values during oestrus. Oestrone sulphate concentrations increased about 3-fold during oestrus and about 10-fold at the peak of PMSG. After about Days 70-75 of pregnancy the levels of oestrone sulphate increased further and values of greater than 250 nmol/l were reached around Day 100.

Percutaneous tendon splitting--method and results.

The paper briefly describes the percutaneous tendon splitting operation as performed in general practice and evaluates its effectiveness on the basis of races run during a 2 year follow-up period. The results are compared with similar figures for normal Standardbred trotters. A higher percentage of horses subjected to splitting of the suspensory ligament failed to remain sound long enough to run more than 10 races during the follow-up period. The percentage of horses returning to racing whose superficial flexor was operated upon was somewhat lower than the control group.

Zherlock: an open source data analysis software.

Zherlock is an open source software that provides state-of-the-art data analysis tools to the user in an intuitive and flexible way. It is a front-end to different numerical "engines" to produce a seamless integration of algorithms written in different computer languages. Of particular interest is creating an interface to high-level scientific languages such as Octave (a Matlab clone) and R (an S-PLUS clone) to enable efficient porting of new data analytical methods. Zherlock uses advanced scientific visualization tools in 2-D and 3-D and has been extended to work on virtual reality (VR) systems. Central to Zherlock is a visual programming environment (VPE) which enables diagram based programming. These diagrams consist of nodes and connection lines where each node is an operator or a method and lines describe the flow of data between nodes. A VPE is chosen for Zherlock because it forms an effective way to control the processing pipeline in complex data analyses. The VPE is similar in functionality to other programs such as IRIS Explorer, AVS or LabVIEW.
